SPSC Grammar Test Preparation Guide

1. Parts of Speech (8 types)

- Noun: Name of person/place/thing (e.g., Ali, Karachi, book)

- Pronoun: Replaces a noun (e.g., He, she, it)

- Verb: Shows action/state (e.g., Run, is, write)

- Adjective: Describes a noun (e.g., Tall, beautiful)

- Adverb: Describes a verb/adjective (e.g., Quickly, very)

- Preposition: Shows position/relation (e.g., On, under, at)

- Conjunction: Connects words/clauses (e.g., And, but, because)

- Interjection: Shows emotion (e.g., Wow! Alas!)

2. Tenses (12 Types)

- Present: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous

- Past: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous

- Future: Simple, Continuous, Perfect, Perfect Continuous

Example: Present Simple -> He plays. (Subject + 1st form + s/es)

3. Subject-Verb Agreement

- Singular subject -> singular verb (e.g., The boy is running)

- Plural subject -> plural verb (e.g., The boys are playing)

4. Active and Passive Voice

- Present Simple: He writes a letter -> A letter is written by him.

- Past Simple: He wrote a letter -> A letter was written by him.

- Future: He will write a letter -> A letter will be written by him.

5. Direct & Indirect Speech

- Direct: He said, "I am happy."

- Indirect: He said that he was happy.

Change pronouns, tense, and time expressions accordingly.

6. Common Grammar Errors

- Incorrect tense

- Subject-verb disagreement
- Preposition misuse

- Wrong article usage (a/an/the)

7. Articles

- a: before consonant sound (e.g., a cat)

- an: before vowel sound (e.g., an apple)

- the: for specific or known things (e.g., the moon)

8. Prepositions

- Common: in, on, at, by, from, for, since, between, among

Example: He sat on the chair. He arrived at 5 PM.

9. Conditional Sentences

- Type 1: If it rains, I will stay.

- Type 2: If I were you, I would go.

- Type 3: If he had studied, he would have passed.

10. Synonyms & Antonyms

- Synonym of "begin" -> start

- Antonym of "brave" -> coward

11. Idioms and Phrases

- Once in a blue moon -> very rarely

- Break the ice -> start a conversation
