MATHEMATICS LESSON PLAN

GRADE 4
TERM 1: January – March

PROVINCE:

DISTRICT:

SCHOOL:

TEACHER’S NAME:

DATE:

DURATION: 2 Hours

1. TOPIC: COLLECTING AND ORGANISING DATA: (Lesson 1&2)

2. CONCEPTS & SKILLS TO BE ACHIEVED:

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to collect data using tally marks and
tables for recording.

Collecting and Organising Data (Lesson 1&2)
(Draft)
3. RESOURCES: DBE textbook, DBE workbook and other textbooks

4. PRIOR KNOWLEDGE:  Collecting data

 Organize data in lists, tallies and tables
5. REVIEW AND CORRECTION OF HOMEWORK (suggested time: 10 minutes)

Homework provides an opportunity for teachers to track learners’ progress in the mastery of
mathematics concepts and to identify the problematic areas which require immediate attention.
Therefore it is recommended that you place more focus on addressing errors from learner
responses that may later become misconceptions.

6. INTRODUCTION (Suggested time:5 Minutes)

MENTAL MATHS (10 minutes)

Copy and complete;

1. 10 + 2 = 6. 5+7=
2. 8+4= 7. 7+6=
3. 7+5= 8. 4+9=
4. 9+4= 9. 3+9=
5. 8+5= 10. 6+7=

7. LESSON PRESENTATION/DEVELOPMENT (Suggested time: 45 minutes)

Learning activities
Teaching activities (Learners are expected to:)
Activity 1

Ask learners the following questions:

1. What is data?
2. Why do we collect data?
3. What can we use to collect data?
Learners discuss an answers questions as
asked by the teacher.
Data – information that has been collected, e.g. Number of
learners who like banana, apple, orange and pear. These
data can be collected using tables and tallies.
 Tallies – marks made to record items as you count
them, should be done in a group of five.
 Table – is way of organising the information collected.
Activity 2
Define tally marks and ‘table’ mathematically. write down the definitions
Tally marks: Vertical lines representing item numbers usually
in group of five and the fifth line diagonal to the first four.
Table: Mathematically a table is means of displaying data or
information in rows and columns.

Activity 3
Collect information from at least 20 learners about their
favourite fruit and complete the table below.
Favourite fruit Tallies Total
Banana
Apple
Pear
Orange

Possible answers
Favourite fruit Tallies Total

Banana 4
Apple 9
Pear 2
Orange 5
Activity 4

How many learners in your class like soccer, netball, rugby Draw up the table.
and athletics? Record and organize data collected.
a) Draw up a table to record and organise the data.
b) Collect the data.

8. CLASSWORK (Suggested time: 45 minutes)

DBE workbook page 58 Activity 1 & 2

9. CONSOLIDATION/CONCLUSION & HOMEWORK (Suggested time: 5 minutes)

a) Emphasise that learners must understand:

 the meaning of mathematical terminology;
 that data is collected to find out how often something happens or how many people do different
things;
 how tally marks are written.
=1

=2

=3

=4

= 5 (Show the fifth tally by making a diagonal through the first four tally marks)

b) The primary purpose of Homework is to give each learner an opportunity to demonstrate mastery of
mathematics skills taught in class. Therefore Homework should be purposeful and the principle of
‘Less is more’ is recommended, i.e. give learners few high quality activities that address variety of
skills than many activities that do not enhance learners’ conceptual understanding. Carefully select
appropriate activities from the DBE textbook, DBE workbooks and/or textbooks for learners’
homework. The selected activities should address different cognitive levels.
