ACTIVITY NO. AND TITLE: NO.1 - LOAD COMBINATION (USING EXCEL
COMPUTATION
INSTRUCTOR: ENGR. JADE Q. BAUTISTA, SO2, RCE, RMP
INTRODUCTION AND INSTRUCTION:
Load combinations are used to design a structure so that it can withstand
various loads like dead load, live load, snow load, rain load, roof live
load, wind load, and seismic or earthquake load. We used load combination
according to ACI, where the following equations conform to the requirements
of the International Building Code (IBC) in designing a structure.
Computing the load combination is important to check if the structural
design is safe. It is important to compute it manually because it helps us
to understand how the loads work together. In the manual, we will put the
values that we have in our loads and compute it using the calculator, and
it takes a lot of time to compute all the equations, unlike using Excel.
Manual computation is good when you are a beginner. And when we use the
software "Excel," it will make our work faster and easier than manual
computation because it saves a lot of time, and Excel handles a lot of data
easily. For instance, we have another set of a structural design that we
need to compute; instead of using manual, we can use Excel, wherein we can
just put the data, and it will solve right away.
How to Use Load Combination Computation Template
1. Put the values of loads in the table of the “TYPES OF LOADS” column
named “LOAD”.
2. Put the unit of the loads under the column of “UNIT”.
3. On the second table, the load combinations are automatically computed.
You can see the critical design load at the table “LOAD COMBINATION.”
EXPLANATION OF THE EQUATIONS USED IN TABLES:
We used the equation according to ACI, where the following equations are
the requirements for International Building Codes (IBC) for the designing
of structures. In the equation, we calculate the U, where it is the
required strength of the structure for us to check if the design is safe
for our structures. The critical design load is the highest load, the
heaviest load that our structure can withstand.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
I learned that when in manual computation, it takes a lot of time for me
to compute the load combinations, but when I am using Excel, it makes my
work easier and faster. Excel is not good when you are only a beginner; it
is better to use manual than to use Excel. And if we have a lot of data, it
is good to use Excel. I learned that when computing manually, there is a
possibility that we can have an error, but when using Excel, we need to put
in the right codes, and after that, we can automatically have the findings
or the critical design load.
