The Brief/Scope:

This assessment focuses on producing and contributing content to an online student news site
to give you an experience that closely resembles a practical real-life newsroom experience.
The objective of this assessment is to challenge and develop students' journalism skills by
requiring them to develop their story ideas that they pitched newsroom style in F1. For your F2
you are required to build on your F1 story idea and produce an article following the seven-step
writing process. (If you did not submit the F1, you should come up with a story idea, then move
on to produce an article.) The content produced for this assessment will assist you to start
building your portfolio for prospective employment when you graduate from Boston Media
House. Please note that you will only get published if you work hard on your F2 submission and
only if you attend classes regularly. Only short-listed articles will progress to the editing stage,
and eventually get published on BMH Buzz.

For the F2 submission, you will do the following:

Tasks:

1. Written article – Rework your F1 story idea pitch incorporating the feedback given by
the lecturer during the oral presentations in Term 1, then proceed to research and write

your article. The article should be between 800-1200 words and should include a catchy
headline and lead, quotes, factual background information, and a strong conclusion. –
50 marks
2. A promotional post for three social media platforms (FB/IG/WA). Use the template
provided. – 30 marks

During the course of the term, the lecturer will be running practical workshops and bootcamps
to help you with the creation of your content and to share her newsroom experience with you.
For Semester B assessments, we shall continue producing more content for BMH BUZZ as well
as cover some theory-heavy, academic work to build your critical thinking skills and academic
proficiency at NQF level 5.

F2 supplementary opportunity:
The F2 submission carries a supplementary assessment opportunity. If you achieve a failing
grade for this assessment, you must apply the feedback from your lecturer and rework your
story for the F2 SUPP.

Learning Outcomes:

This assessment event requires you to demonstrate that you know and understand the basic
principles and skills that underpin journalism as a practice and can apply this knowledge to a
specific journalistic context.

This assessment event requires you to demonstrate that you can apply various tools and
techniques to:

 Conduct research using appropriate sources.


 Apply a constructive approach to researching for a story.
 Understand the basic rules of storytelling in journalism.
 Apply the constructs of reading, writing and communication with an understanding of
ethics and professionalism.
 Submit well-written stories that are ready for publication.
 Submit a well-constructed assessment that is free of plagiarism.

Plagiarism:
Any suspicion of plagiarism will be penalised.

Evidence Requirements:
 This assignment must be completed individually.
 The assignment must include a cover page. Each cover page must include the following:
o Learner’s name and student number
o Subject details
o Assignment details and title
 The various sections of the assignment must be clearly labelled.
 A non-plagiarism declaration must be included and signed by the learner. Failure to
include this will indicate plagiarism on the part of the learner and will be penalised
accordingly.
 Any suspicion of plagiarism will be penalised as per the Student Rule Book and at the
CopyLeaks percentage of 30%. If CopyLeaks detects a percentage of 30% or above, the
following penalties will apply:
-20% First Year
-50% Second Year
-100% Third Year
 The following oversights or omissions (including, but not limited to) will constitute
plagiarism:
- Copying words, images, music, video footage etc. produced by someone else
without giving credit to the source in-text and in the list of references;
- Failure to put a direct quotation in quotation marks even where an in-text citation is
provided for;
- Failure to include in-text citations where you have paraphrased the published work
of someone else;
- Failure to include a reference list at the end of an assessment;
- Providing incorrect information (fabrication or misinformation) about the source of a
quote;
- The in-text citations do not correspond directly with the reference list in more than two
instances.
