Instructions: Reflect of the following aspects of Jose Rizal’s experiences in Europe and the Impact it had
on his life and work. Answer the questions thoughtfully and completely.

Academic Pursuits and Personal Growth

1. Rizal excelled in various fields of study. Identify his major academic achievements in hi European years.
What specific skills and knowledge did he acquire? How did this education shape his later endeavors?

- He went to Paris and Berlin to continue his studies in medicine in order to specialize in ophthalmology.
He did this because he wanted to cure his mother’s eye ailment. He worked with Dr. Louis de Weckert
from November 1885 to February 1866 as an assistant. His dedication in studying paid off and eventually
cured his mother’s eye ailment.

2. Rizal’s time abroad exposed him to diverse cultures and perspectives. Describe the impact of this
exposure on his worldview and his understanding of the Philippines’ situation. How did it influence his
writing activism?

- He was exposed to different ideologies, culture, and governance in different countries like Spain, France,
Germany and Japan. It deepened his understanding on the injustices in the Philippines. Seeing how other
countries are progressive, it inspired him to advocate for change and education to his homeland. His
experiences influenced the writings of his novel and writings, highlighting the societal issues that the
Philippines is currently facing.

3. How did Rizal’s experience abroad contribute to his personal development? Consider his intellectual
growth, his evolving political views, and his sense of self. Dis he undergo any significant personal
transformations? Explain.

- The experience abroad strengthened his awareness and identity as a Filipino. He was exposed to
different ideas from his travel around Europe and saw how valuable freedom and equality is. He became
a reformist that advocate peaceful change in the Philippines.
The Impact of his Experience

1. How did Rizal’s Education and experiences abroad directly influence the content and themes of his
novels? Provide specific examples from the novels to support your answer.

- The experiences he observes economically and politically in Europe influenced the content of his
writings. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin inspired Rizal to prepare a novel that would depict
the miseries of his people under the Spaniards. While he was studying in Europe, he was exposed to liberal
ideas which shaped the character of Ibarra, who believed in reform through education. Another exapke is
Padre Damaso which mirrored the corruption and tyranny of the Spaniards.

2. How did his time in Europe contribute to his role in the Propaganda Movement? What specific actions
did he take, and what impact did his actions have on the movement’s goals?

- He was the honorary president of Asociacion La Solidaridad and his leadership played a key role to the
propaganda movement. This gave him access liberal ideas, freedom to write openly, and connected with
his fellow reformists. The specific action he took was the writing of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo
and advocating for the rights of the Filipino. He became a catalyst and instilled nationalism in the hearts
of every Filipino, eventually changing the Philippines in to a more peaceful country.

3. How did Rizal’s experiences abroad shape his legacy as a national hero? What aspects of his European
journey are most significant in understanding his contributions to the Philippines?

- Rizal was good in writing that’s why he had novels to fight against the tyranny of the Spaniards. He beame
a symbol of non-violent resistance. He should that being educated, your beliefs and reason, and patriotism
could challenge operation. His writings inspired Filipinos to think critically and stand up for their rights.
The liberal ideas he got from his travel made a significant change in the lives of every Filipinos.
Personal Reflection

1. How are Rizal’s experiences relevant to young Filipinos today? What lessons can be learned from his
journey?

- Even though Rizal has few money/allowances, it did not stop him from pursuing his goal – finish his
studies. Violence is not always the answer. Look at how Rizal fought for his country, only with his pen and
paper. Whether your actions are small, it may bring impact to another person. Also, having connection
can greatly help you in times of need.

2. What aspects of Rizal’s life and experiences resonate most with you personally? How can you apply his
example to your own life and goals?

- There are three that resonates to me the most: Stand up for what is right, education is important, and
always have a purpose wherever you are. I always believed that you are where you are because you have
a purpose. Even if you do not know it right now, find it and nurture it. We should value education. If you
are privileged enough to go to school, finish it and do not waste the opportunity you have. No matter how
dark the path may be or bad company appears, always stand for what is right. Always live an honest and
purpose-drive life.
