Module Description

Brief Summary What is it for an action to be right or wrong, and why should I be moral in the first
place? This unit introduces and critically explains the central issues in theoretical ethics
in order to enable students to evaluate the arguments, positions, and theories that
underpin these questions, and develop their own metaethical position.

Indicative Content Throughout emphasis is placed on developing the critical, analytical and conceptual
skills needed to comprehend the complexity of ethical debates in the modern world and
to engage with them. This unit focussed on central problems in theoretical ethics. The
unit syllabus typically begins with examining three sceptical challenges to common-
sense morality: moral relativism and its relation to moral subjectivism and amoralism
(nihilism), respectively. We will then examine some philosophical attempts to provide
rational grounds, against amoralism and nihilism, for adhering to common-sense moral
code. The second part of the unit is devoted to normative ethics where we typically
critically examine the relative merit of the main three approaches in ethical theory:
Utilitarianism, Kantianism and Virtue Ethics. The aim will be to see whether either of
these moral philosophical systems manages to capture what makes and action right or
wrong and what, if anything, role our common-sense moral intuitions about moral
rightness and wrongness should play in evaluating normative ethical theories.
