Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries. Pronunciation is shown
throughout the text.
This book is designed for beginners who aim to learn Arabic
quickly and accurately. But the approach of this book will be found
useful not only for beginners but also university students pursuing
higher studies in Arabic.

Mahmood Hafiz Abdul Rub Mirza (b.1978) has

spent his childhood in the Kingdom of Saudi
Arabia, and received his education in that
country up to class 12. Arabic comes naturally to
him and speaks Arabic as good as native speaker.
A graduate and post graduate from J.N.U., New
Delhi (five years integrated M.A. programme,
1999-2003). The author is a Ph.D. scholar with the same university
after completing his M.Phil.
This book in hand is his maiden effort and it promises a bright
future for the author.

Introduction
Indo- Arab relations have existed from the ancient times
and Indians have always attempted to know the Arabs closely.
This thing is not possible without knowing the language that
Arab brethren speak and hence, there has been a long tradition in
India to learn Arabic.
In India, Indian scholars have created sizable literature
though mostly religious. However, it shows that we have always
kept Arabic and Islam in high esteem and we have always tried
to endear ourselves to the Arab. For the past four decades or so
the ground- realities have changed with the advent of black gold
in the Arab countries which has led to development in the Arab
countries. Thus multi-farious development activities requisition
workforce from outside the Arab countries including technical &
skilled and non- technical & unskilled. Indians of all castes and
creeds go to the Arab countries seeking employment. To
facilitate their stay in Arab countries they like to learn the
spoken Arabic.
Book in your hand is one such which teaches basic
Arabic sentences of day to day conversation. Lessons have been
built on specified situations and the most essential vocabularies
have been fed in them. These Arabic sentences shall be useful
for people going to any part of Arab world and in dealing with
people who know no language other than Arabic. I am sure each
reader and user of this book will find it very useful.

Preface
The history of Arabic cultural centres spread throughout
Indian sub-continent by the establishment of various religious
schools, which later became a major source of education for the
people of India in general and Muslims in particular.
As for the methods followed by these schools, they
adopted either traditional curricula or a mixture of traditional and
modern curricula, where the students spend many years in
learning the Arabic language. As a result, they become fluent in
Arabic writing, reading and conversation. However, in spite of
that they still face difficulties while interacting with the Arabs
directly, because they are not fluent and acquainted with the
colloquial Arabic or that being spoken in the Arab world.
Therefore, through this book, I have worked to provide the most
important words and phrases used by the Arabs currently in the
form of simple conversation, so, that the reader could be
acquainted with the language and become a master within a short
period of time. In this context, I have adhered to the colloquial
spoken in Saudi Arabia in particular and other Gulf countries in
general. It is worth mentioning that the method which has been
adopted during the preparation of this book is to facilitate the
learning of colloquial Arabic for non- Arabic speaking students
and travellers throughout the world.
The main objective of this book is to bridge the gap
between the Arabic taught in schools and the one spoken by
Arabs today, so, that the desired benefits could be obtained.
By the grace of Almighty Allah I had the opportunity to spend
the best part of my life in Saudi Arabia -about 18 years of my
early life- which provided the opportunity to learn Arabic like
my mother tongue. I had also pursued my secondary education
from Umm-al Qura Senior Secondary school in Jeddah.
Therefore, I feel myself better equipped to share my experiences

with the readers of this book which may prove quite beneficial to
the learners.
In this context, I would like to draw the attention of
readers to some different pronunciations of the Arabs which are
as under:
“‫ ”ق‬Pronounced “‫ ”أ‬in Egypt and “‫ ”گ‬in Saudi Arabia and
pronounced “‫ ”غ‬in Yemen and Sudan.
“‫ ”ك‬Transforms into “‫ ”چ‬in some Gulf countries.
“‫ ”ث‬turns into “‫ ”ت‬in almost entire Arab world.
“‫ ”ذ‬turns into “‫ ”د‬in Egypt and some parts of the Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia.
“‫ ”ج‬Pronounced “‫ ”گ‬in Egypt and “‫ ”ي‬in some of the Gulf
countries, except the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where it remains
“‫”ج‬.
We find slight difference between the Saudi Arabic and
the rest of the Gulf countries, where people of the Gulf say “‫”هني‬
“Hinee” instead of “‫“ ”هنا‬Hinaa” and “‫“ ”مي‬Mee” rather than
“‫“ ”ما‬Maa”, while it remains as it is in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi
people usually use “‫ وش‬/‫“ ”إش‬Esh/ Wesh” instead of “‫ ما‬/‫”ماذا‬
“Maadhaa /Maa” but the people of the other Gulf countries say
“‫ شنو‬/‫“ ”شو‬Shoo/ Shinoo”. The Saudi people and most of the
Arabs usually use “‫“ ”في‬Fee” instead of “‫“ ”يوجد‬Yujadu” and
they tried to use “‫“ ”في‬Fee” in the most of positive and negative
sentences of day- to- day conversation.
Most of the Arabs usually remove some letters from
some words as they say “‫“ ”ود‬Wadd” instead of “‫“ ”ولد‬Waladun”
and remove some words from particular sentences also as they
say “‫“ ”معليش‬Maàleish” rather than “‫“ ”ما عليك شيء‬Maa àlaika
Shaiun”. They use “‫ ”ي‬and “‫ ”ا‬ignoring its “‫”ء‬. Sometimes they
add some letters in the word as well. They release assimilation
with “‫ ”ي‬as they say “‫“ ”استحميت‬Istaḥammeit” instead of
“‫“ ”استحممت‬Istaḥmamtu”.
The Arabs in general add “‫ ”بـ‬before the present tense.
And use “‫ ”هـ‬instead of “‫ سـ‬/‫ ”سوف‬for the future perfect tense as
say “‫“ ”بجي‬bajee” and “‫“ ”هاكتب‬Haktub”.

Moreover, we see some minor differences in some

words, where people of the Gulf say “‫ أبي‬/‫“ ”أبغى‬Abghaa/ Abee”
rather than “‫“ ”أريد‬Ureedu”, while the Egyptians use “‫ عايز‬/‫”بدي‬
“Biddee/ Àayez” instead of that. The Egyptians frequently suffix
“‫ ”ش‬to the past negative tense for example, they say “‫”ما تئدرش‬
“Maa Te- adarsh” instead of “‫“ ”ال تقدر‬Laa Taqdiru” and “ ‫ما‬
‫“ ”عنديش‬Maa àindeesh” rather than “‫“ ”ما عندي‬Maa àindee” and
so on.
I have divided this book into three parts. In the first part,
I have introduced easy and simple conversation, used in different
situations, which might be considered very important for the
students or the travellers. In the second part, I have tried to
introduce the names of some diseases, professions, fruits,
vegetables and animals etc. Further more, I introduced names of
the days, seasons, years, colours and numbers. In the third part, I
tried to collect a number of vernacular words often used during
conversation but are strange for the learners. At the end of this
book I have added some proverbs used in colloquial Arabic.
In conclusion, I take this opportunity to extend my sincere
thanks to all who assisted me in preparing this book, especially
Attaché to Saudi Ambassador in India Mr. Musaed Al- Harbi
and all the staff of the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia in New
Delhi, and my elder brother Nabeel Mirza as well as my friend
Abdul Malik in addition to all those people who were in anyway
helpful to me in preparing this small handbook of colloquial
Arabic conversation.

Arabic like Urdu is written and read from right to left. The
Arabic Alphabet consists of twenty eight letters. Last two
letters are in fact the variant forms of letters nos. 1 and 3
respectively. However, for our convenience we can
consider them to be thirty letters. Most of the letters take
different shapes while constituting the first letter of a word,
the last letter of a word or while occurring in between. All
the twenty eight letters are consonants. Three of these
letters (‫)ا‬, (‫)و‬, and (‫ )ي‬are used as long vowels also.
