Robotics Science Fair Project
CyberCity: Energizing Tomorrow
Project Overview
“CyberCity: Energizing Tomorrow” transforms two robotics mats into a
futuristic urban hub where six robots showcase automation’s role in
transportation, energy, recreation, and industry. Built with LEGO Mindstorms,
Qunlong, and Xuankong kits, our robots include: a programmable LEGO
Mindstorms EVO bowling robot for recreation; two non-programmable
Qunlong robots (a windmill for energy and an industrial mechanism for
sorting); and three programmable Xuankong robots (a truck/trailer for
delivery, a tank for heavy-duty transport, and a drag racer for speed). The
entire setup was done by students in grades 4-8.
Project Components
Recreation Zone (Mat 1):
The LEGO Mindstorms EVO Bowling Robot, programmed via EV3-G or Python,
uses two large motors for movement and a medium motor for a swinging
arm (3:1 gear ratio) to knock down some LEGO pins. An ultrasonic sensor
detects pins at 30 cm, ensuring precise strikes.
Transportation Zone (Mat 1):
Three Xuankong robots, programmed via the XKBlockly Android app, perform
transport tasks with obstacles (LEGO walls, ramps):Truck/Trailer: Tows a LEGO
trailer loaded with cubes across a 1-meter path, navigating a the map to
simulate delivery.
Tank: Carries heavy LEGO blocks over a sophisticated terrain with obstacles,
showcasing robust design.
Drag Racer: Races 1 meter in under 5 seconds, dodging LEGO walls,
demonstrating speed and control.
Energy Zone (Mat 2):
The Qunlong Windmill, with non-programmable motors, spins 10 cm blades
(3:1 gear ratio) when powered on, connected to an LED circuit to simulate
energy generation, activated by a fan or hand-crank.
Industrial Zone (Mat 2): The Qunlong Industrial Mechanism, with non-
programmable motors, rotates a sorting arm to push plastic balls into the
mechanism, mimicking factory automation with continuous motion on power-
up.
Scientific Implications
CyberCity explores robotics and engineering principles: Mechanics: Gear
systems (3:1 ratios in the bowling robot and windmill) increase torque,
showing how mechanical design enhances efficiency.
Sensor Integration: The EVO bowling robot’s ultrasonic sensor enables
precise targeting, illustrating feedback systems in automation.
Programming: EV3-G/Python (bowling robot) and XKBlockly (Xuankong
robots) implement logic for movement and timing, demonstrating
computational thinking. Non-programmable Qunlong robots highlight motor-
driven mechanics without software.
Energy Conversion: The windmill converts kinetic energy to light an LED,
modeling renewable clean energy systems critical for sustainability.
By simulating real-world applications—delivery trucks, energy turbines,
robotic sports, and factory automation—CyberCity connects STEM to societal
needs, inspiring career paths in technology. The windmill emphasizes
sustainable energy, addressing global challenges like climate change.
This project not only advances technological understanding but also inspires
a sustainable, automated tomorrow and shapes young innovators.
