Answer to Assignment#1
Introduction to Sequential control
3-6. Sketch the circuit diagram of a sequential control system with the following features.
a. Motor starter 1 M is energized by pressing a momentary contact start switch.
b. Motor starter 1 M can be de-energized only by pressing a momentary contact stop
switch.
Ans:
3-7. Modify the circuit diagram of Exercise 6 to include the following additional features.
a. Limit switch 1L must be closed before the start switch can energize the motor
starter 1 M.
b. Either opening limit switch 1L or pressing the stop switch can de-energize motor
starter 1 M.
3-8. Modify the circuit diagram of Exercise 6 to include the following additional
features.
a. Limit switch 1L must close before the start switch can energize the motor starter
I M.
b. Opening limit switch 1L cannot de-energize the motor starter. The motor starter 1 M
can be de-energized only by pressing a momentary contact stop switch.
3-9. Sketch the circuit diagram of a sequential control system with the -following
features.
a. A hydraulic cylinder is operated by a two-position, four-way valve as shown in Figure
3.17.
b. A 15-horsepower electric motor is controlled by a motor starter, as shown in Figure
3.14.
c. An interlock is provided so that the hydraulic cylinder cannot operate unless the 15-
hosepower motor starter is energized.
Question #
Modify the circuit diagram of the sequential control system of problem (3-9) to
include ON-delay Timer , such that the solenoid (Sol b ) is energized 5 seconds
latter from the pump-motor.
Ans:
Question :
For the sequential control circuit for a hydraulic hoist as shown in Figure 3.18.
1. What is the problem of using the three-position solenoid valve in this system?
Ans: This system uses a three-position solenoid valve which presents a special
problem. Since it is not desirable to energize both solenoids at the same time, an interlock
can be used to eliminate this possibility.
2. Explain how this problem is solved in this system?
Ans: an interlock can be used to eliminate this possibility.
3. What does happen when the start button is pressed? The stop button is pressed?
Ans: The hydraulic hoist system is started and stopped by energizing relay 1M, which
starts the pump motor and. energizes the solenoid control circuit.
4. State the sequence of operation occurred when the up switch is pressed? When
both switches are pressed together?
Ans: When the up switch is pressed, relay 1 CR is energized. Half of the interlock
feature acts when the normally closed 1CR contact opens so that relay 2CR cannot be
energized. The normally open 1CR contact closes and solenoid a is energized. This
connects the hydraulic supply line to the bottom of the hydraulic cylinder, raising the
platform_
5. What would happen to the cylinder when either of the down and up switches are not
pressed?
Ans: When valve goes to the neutral position. The cylinder is locked in its
present position as long as the solenoid is in neutral.
6. State the sequence of operation occurred when the down switch is pressed?
Ans: When the down switch is pressed, relay 2CR is energized the normally
closed 2CR contact opens so that relay 1CR contact energized. This is the second half
of the interlock feature . The normally open 2CR contact closes and solenoid b is
energized
7. State the sequence of operation occurred when both the up switch and the down
switch ares pressed togther?
Ans: The interlock prevent this operatin.
Question #
Electromechanical components are- frequently used in sequential control. Figures 3.13 and 3,15 contain
schematic symbols of some of the most common sequential control components. (a) Write the title of each
component. (b) Explain the operation of two components, give example.
