Urban Study Area: Medellin, Colombia

Theme: Architecture and Nature – Greening the City

The Urban Study component of the final year Master of Architecture


programme gives students the opportunity to inves<gate and develop an
understanding of the complex urban issues, which help to shape, drive
and define urban life and architectural solu<ons.

Part 1 Medellin, Colombia

Review the data collected and presented from your study tour to Medellin along with the data
collected in the study tour of 2023.
Working in groups of 4 iden<fy the environmental, social and economic characteris<cs of the study
area that yield an iden<ty of place u<lizing the following parameters / themes:

§ Ecology: Morphology l Environment l Infrastructure


§ Socio-cultural: History l Demographics l Architecture + Public Space l Streets I Building Typology
§ Economic: Land Use I Circula<on + Transporta<on + Parking (Vehicular, Pedestrian) Density +
Urban Typologies

Some of this informa<on would have already been collected but there are gaps which need to be
filled to capture a complete understanding of the study area.

Working in groups, students should:


Qualita<vely and quan<ta<vely document observa<ons/inves<ga<ons, e.g. environmental, physical,
social, economic cultural/ historical, and poli<cal components, and establish the dis<nct essence and
iden<ty of the study area. The area of study will be the same as that carried out on the study tour
with minor adjustments to be agreed.

Analysis:
Students will analyse their findings and inves<gate the complexi<es of issues revealed through visual
diagrams and imagery and develop research ques<ons that inform an understanding of the study
areas’ sustainability.
Explore how these issues are discernible through 2 and 3-dimensional analyses of urban morphology,
typology, topology.
Students are to apply the specific methodologies reviewed in Assignment 1, Literature review, to
Medellin and discuss the validity of the approach to understanding and analysing the study area.
Informa<on researched is to be shared across groups.

Schedule:
Friday, September 6, 2024: Students will make a presenta<on, in a medium of their choosing
that encapsulates what they deem to be the essence of the study
area. Other deliverables are to include data collected (maps,
photographs, sketches ,drawings, diagrams) rela<ve to urban
themes.
Tuesday, September 10, 2024: Group presenta<on
Friday, September 13, 2024: Data Analysis- explore and analyze 2d/3d visualiza<on
Tuesday, September 17, 2024: Group presenta<on, External Jury
