Systematic Desensitization
Definition:
Systematic desensitization is a behavioral therapy used to reduce phobic and anxiety responses
through gradual exposure to the feared object/situation while using relaxation techniques.

Phases:

1. Relaxation Training: Learning methods such as deep breathing, meditation, or

progressive muscle relaxation.
2. Anxiety Hierarchy: Listing situations from least to most anxiety-provoking.
3. Gradual Exposure: Facing each situation step-by-step while remaining relaxed, starting
from the least fearful.

Applications:

 Specific phobias (e.g., fear of heights, animals)

 Social anxiety
 Some PTSD cases

Example:
For fear of dogs: Start with looking at pictures of dogs → watching videos → seeing a dog from
a distance → petting a calm dog.
