1. Introduction about the Union Territory – Andaman and Nicobar


Islands
The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is a Union Territory of India located in the Bay of Bengal,
consisting of around 572 islands, out of which only a few are inhabited. These islands are known for
their strategic location, pristine beaches, rich biodiversity, and indigenous tribes. The capital is Port
Blair. The territory is divided into two island groups – Andaman Islands (to the north) and Nicobar
Islands (to the south).

2. State Symbols
 State Animal: Dugong (sea cow)

 State Bird: Andaman Wood Pigeon

 State Flower: Andaman Pyinma (Lagerstroemia hypoleuca)


 State Tree: Andaman Padauk (Pterocarpus dalbergioides)

3. Art and Craft


The islands are known for:

 Wood carving, especially using Padauk wood


 Shell crafts, using conch and tortoise shells
 Cane and bamboo products
 Nicobari mats and baskets handwoven by the Nicobarese tribes

4. Music and Dance


 Nicobari Dance is the most famous traditional dance form, especially performed during
the Ossuary Feast (Pig Festival).
 Folk music is influenced by tribal culture and is often accompanied by indigenous
instruments.
 The islands also feature a mix of South Indian, Bengali, and Burmese cultural rhythms.

5. Cultural Aspects
 A melting pot of Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayali, and Nicobari cultures.
 Home to several indigenous tribes, including the Great
Andamanese, Jarwas, Sentinelese, Shompens, and Nicobarese.
 Languages spoken include Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and tribal dialects.
 Festivals: Island Tourism Festival, Durga Puja, Pongal, Onam, and indigenous tribal
festivals.

 Radhanagar Beach (Havelock Island) – known as one of Asia’s best beaches
 Cellular Jail – a historic colonial prison
 Limestone Caves – Baratang Island
 Mud Volcanoes, Bioluminescent beaches, Coral reefs, and Mangrove forests
