Detailed Topic: The Solar System

The Solar System is a vast and dynamic region of space dominated by the Sun. It contains eight
planets, more than 200 moons, countless asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. The Sun itself
accounts for about 99.8% of the total mass of the system.

The inner planets—Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars—are rocky worlds with solid surfaces. They
are relatively small compared to the outer planets. Earth, the third planet from the Sun, is unique for
its liquid water and life-supporting atmosphere.

The outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune—are much larger. Jupiter is the largest
planet and has a powerful magnetic field, while Saturn is famous for its spectacular ring system.
Uranus rotates on its side, and Neptune has supersonic winds.

Beyond Neptune lies the Kuiper Belt, a region filled with icy bodies, including dwarf planets like
Pluto, Haumea, and Eris. Farther still is the Oort Cloud, a hypothetical spherical shell of icy objects
believed to be the source of long-period comets.

Moons are also an important part of the Solar System. Jupiter’s moon Ganymede is the largest,
even bigger than the planet Mercury. Saturn’s moon Titan has thick clouds and methane lakes,
while Europa is believed to hide a subsurface ocean.

The Solar System is constantly evolving. Asteroids and comets sometimes collide with planets,
shaping their surfaces. Exploration missions, such as Voyager, New Horizons, and the Mars rovers,
continue to expand our understanding of this cosmic neighborhood.
