Tell the pupils that they are going to be learning how to
use capital letters correctly.
The Teaching Input
Use the Letter Match resource to model how to match the lowercase letter with the its corresponding
capital letter.
Ask the pupils when they think we should use a capital letter. Reinforce the idea that capital letters should
be used at the beginning of the first word in each sentence. Tell the pupils that other special words, such
as the days of the week, the months of the year and the names of people and places all start with a capital
letter. Give each pair of pupils a highlighter and the Example Sentence sheet and ask them to highlight the
letters that should be capitals.
Activity
Ask the pupils to reread the beginning and the middle of their story about Ben the dog from the previous
week. Explain that they are going to write a different ending to the story. For example, ‘Ben did not like having
a bath. He went into the garden and rolled in the mud. His owner had to bath him all over again.’
Once they have finished, encourage the pupils to peer-mark checking that the capital letters are in the
correct places.
Plenary
Provide time for the pupil to be proud of what they have written and read their stories to others.
