CIE 1 Question bank

1) An airplane has an aspect ratio of 6.2, wing area =16.82sqm, Oswalds efficiency factor 0.91, Weight
13350N and zero lift drag coefficient 0.027. The airplane is powered by a single piston engine 345hp
at SL. Assume power of engine is proportional to free stream density and propeller efficiency 0.83,
Calculate power required at a velocity of 75m/s and max velocity at SL and power required and
power available at 4000m altitude (density is 0.81kg/m^3).

2) Write the equations motion for accelerated level steady flight

3) An airplane has the following characteristics. Wing area 47sqm. AR=6.5. e=0.87;
Weight=103047 N and zero lift drag =0.032. The airplane is equipped with two engines with
40298N of thrust each at SL. Determine max angle of climb, velocity at max angle of climb
and rate of climb at max angle of climb at SL and at 10km (density 0.4131kg/m3); Comment
on the results

4) Draw Thrust required and thrust available vs velocity for different altitudes SL and 10K ft for
a jet airplane

5) An airplane weighing 22250N is flying at SL with a velocity of 89.41m/s. At this velocity L/D is
maximum. The wing area and aspect ratio are 18.58sqm and 8.5 respectively. Oswalds efficiency
factor is 0.93, Calculate the total drag of the airplane

6) Deduce the condition for the minimum power required, draw a curve Power required vs
velocity and indicate the minimum power on the curve

7) Consider an airplane with a weight of 8000N, S=16sqm and zero lift drag coefficient is 0.02
and Oswalds efficiency factor 0.8 and aspect ratio of 6. In steady level flight with wing lift
coefficient of 0.375. Considering same flight speed and density, determine the ratio of
induced drag coefficient during steady level flight to that of 30deg climb.

8) Deduce a general equation for determining (L/D) of an airplane at any given velocity and
draw a curve (L/D) vs free stream velocity

9) An aircraft with a mass of 400000kg cruises at 240m/s at an altitude of 10km. Its lift to drag
ratio is 15. Assuming g= 9.81 m/sec^2, determine the power (in HP) needed for its cruise

10) Determine the velocity for max (CL^1.5/CD) condition

11) A low-speed aircraft had the following aerodynamic characteristics. Zero lift drag =0.02 and
e=1.0. The aircraft was flown to maintain a steady level flight and for minimum thrust
required at a lift coefficient of 0.8. Compute the aspect ratio of wing. If the same airplane
flying at min power, what is the AR of the wing.

12) Explain speed stability using the drag polar

SL. At SL the rate of climb is 20.87m/s. Calculate the time to climb, assuming linear
variation of rate of climb with altitude

14) Critically analyse the effects of altitude and wing loading on rate of climb

15) A commercial aircraft is equipped with two turbofan engines with each thrust 31KN. The
max take-off weight is 50000kg and wing area is 91 sqm, AR=6 and e=0.8 and zero lift
drag 0.03. Estimate the rate of climb at a Mach number of 0.4 at SL. State any
assumptions.
