PART-B(5*13=65)
11. a) The drive from a motor to a machine consisting of three V belts of size B.
The motor pulley has a pitch diameter of 150 mm and the machine pulley 13 C309.1/K6
diameter is 450 mm. If the C.D. is 1.5 m, determine the full specifications
of the belt and the machine pulley. Specify its dimensions on a neat sketch.
(OR)
b) Design a chain drive to actuate the compressor from 15 kW electric motor
at 1000 rpm. The compressor is running at 550 rpm. Minimum centre 13 C309.1/K6
distance is 550 mm. The chain tension may be adjusted by shifting the
motor on the rails. The compressor is to work 8 hours / day.
12. a) Design a spur gear based on beam strength which connects an electric
motor to a reciprocating pump both being mounted on the same bed. Speed
of the motor is 1440 rpm. Speed reduction desired is 10:1 .Motor 13 C309.2/K6
power= 35 kW. The gears are to have 20 pressure angle. Both the pinion
and wheel are made of C 45 steel.
(OR)
b) A pair of helical gear with 23 helix angle is to transmit 2.5 kW at 1000 rpm
of the pinion. The velocity ratio is 4:1. Both gears are made of Hardened 13 C309.2/K6
steel. The gears are of 20 full depth involutes form and the pinion is to
have 24 teeth. Design the drive.
13. a) Design a worm gear to transmit a power of 22.5 kW .The worm speed is 13 C309.3/K6
1440 rpm and a wheel speed is 60 rpm. The drive should have a minimum
efficiency of 80% and above. Select suitable materials for the worm and
worm wheel
(OR)
b) Design a pair of bevel gear for two shafts whose axes are at right angles.
The power transmitted is 25 kW. The speed of the pinion is 300 rpm and of 13 C309.3/K6
the gear is 120 rpm.
14. a) Draw the kinematic arrangement and speed diagram of a headstock gear box
of a turret lathe having arrangement for 9 spindle speeds ranging from 31.5
rpm to 1050 rpm . Calculate the number of teeth on each gear if the 13 C309.4/K6
minimum number of teeth on each is to be 20. Also calculate the percentage
deviation of the obtainable speeds from the calculated ones. (OR)
b) In a drilling machine 12 different speeds in the range of 100 rpm and 355
rpm are required. Design a three stage gear box with a standard step ratio. 7 C309.4/K6
Sketch the layout of the gear box indicating the number of teeth on each
gear. The gear box receives 5 kW from a motor at 360 rpm.
15. a)i) Explain the working principles of Internal Expanding and External 7 C309.5/K4
contracting rim clutches
ii) (OR) 6 C309.5/K4
b) A single plate clutch transmits 25 kW at 900 rpm. The maximum pressure
intensity between the plates is 85 kN/m 2 . The ratio between radii is 1.25.
Both the sides of the plate are effective and the coefficient of the friction is 13 C309.5/K4
0.25. Determine (i) Inner diameter of the plate (ii) Axial force required to
engage the clutch. Assume theory of Uniform wear.
PART-C(1*15=15)
16 a) A 14 speed gear box is required to furnish output speed in range of 20 to
400 rpm. Draw the speed diagram and kinematic arrangement. Motor speed 15 C309.4/K5
is 970 rpm. Also find the number of teeth on each gears

b)i)
A sliding mesh gear box is to be used for ‘4’ forward and ‘1’ reverse
speeds. First gear speed ratio is 5.5 and reverse speed gear ratio is 5.8.
Clutch gear on clutch shaft and (constant mesh) on lay shaft has speed ratio
of 2. Calculate the no of teeth on all the gears. Assume that the min no of 15 C309.4/K5
teeth on any gear should not be less than 18. Calculate the actual gear ratios.
Assume that the geometric progression for gear ratios, top gear(fourth) third
gear, second and first is 1:x:x2:x3.
