Institutional Policy on Use of AI Tools by Students
1. Introduction
The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools (e.g., ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Grammarly, etc.) has transformed the academic
and professional landscape. To ensure responsible, ethical, and productive use, this policy outlines the permitted usage,
limitations, and expectations for engineering students.
2. Scope
This policy applies to all undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students as well as PhD Scholars across all departments,
in all academic and professional settings, including:
➢ Teaching-learning activities
➢ Assignments, projects, and assessments
➢ Online interviews and internships
➢ Research and innovation tasks
3. General Guidelines
3.1 Acceptable Uses Students may use AI tools for:
➢ Enhancing understanding of complex topics
➢ Drafting or refining code (with full attribution)
➢ Language assistance (grammar checks, paraphrasing)
➢ Research support (initial idea generation, summaries)
3.2 Unacceptable Uses The following actions are strictly prohibited:
➢ Submitting AI-generated content as original work without proper attribution
➢ Using AI to cheat in examinations or online interviews
➢ Fabricating data, citations, or experimental results
➢ Violating any academic integrity norms using AI-generated assistance
4. Teaching-Learning Activities
AI tools can be used as a supplement, not a substitute for active learning. Faculty may assign tasks that either incorporate or
exclude AI tool usage, students must adhere strictly. Plagiarism detection and AI-generated content checks may be
implemented.
5. Assignments, Projects and Research
Students are permitted to use AI tools for tasks like code suggestions, data visualization, and literature reviews. However, they
must ensure their own critical thinking and originality are at the core of the work. Any AI assistance must be clearly disclosed
in a declaration attached to each submission. For programming tasks, students must be prepared to independently explain their
code and logic if questioned. Similarly, projects, dissertations, and any publications or reports must include a detailed note on
the extent of AI tool usage and the similarity index must be up to 20%
6. Online Interviews and Assessments
Use of AI tools during live or proctored interviews, assessments, or tests is strictly prohibited unless explicitly allowed. Any
detected use during online placement drives or internship tests will lead to disqualification and disciplinary action.
7. Ethical and Legal Compliance
Students must not use AI tools for spreading misinformation, hacking, deepfake creation, or accessing restricted academic
data. All AI use must comply with institutional, national, and copyright laws.
8. Disciplinary Measures
Violation of this policy will lead to action based on the institution's academic integrity or misconduct code. Penalties may
include:
➢ Grade penalties or assignment rejection
➢ Suspension of placement privileges
➢ Disciplinary hearing for repeated or severe violations
