Internet and Web

a. Internet

The internet is a global network of interconnected computers and servers that

communicate with each other. It allows users to access vast amounts of information,
communicate, and share data through various platforms like websites, email, and
online services.

• World Wide Web (WWW)

The WWW is a service of the internet that hosts websites, which consist of text,
images, videos, and other media accessible through web browsers like Chrome,
Firefox, and Safari. Websites are identified by unique URLs and are hosted on
servers connected to the internet.

• E-mail (Electronic Mail)

Email is a method of exchanging digital messages over the internet. Users
create accounts with email providers like Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook, and use
them to send messages, attachments, and other files to others. Email works by
routing messages from the sender’s server to the recipient’s server, making it an
essential tool for communication and business.

b. Search Engines

A search engine is an online tool that allows users to search for information on the
internet by typing keywords or phrases. It searches through databases of indexed
websites and presents relevant results based on the query.

Structure of a Search Engine:

• Crawling: Search engines use bots (web crawlers) to explore and index web
pages.
• Indexing: The crawled data is then stored in a database.
• Ranking: When you search, the search engine ranks results based on relevance,
using algorithms that evaluate factors like keywords, content quality, and user
experience.
Popular Search Engines:

• Google
• Bing
• Yahoo
• DuckDuckGo (focuses on privacy)
