Question 1 [30]

One kilogram of air is taken through a constant pressure cycle. At the commencement of the
adiabatic compression, the pressure and temperature are 110 kPa and 105°C respectively. The
adiabatic compression has a volume of ratio of 8:1. The overall volume ratio of the cycle is 12:1.
Take y=1.4, Cp=1.006 kJ/kg K. Determine for the cycle:

(a) The pressure, volume, and temperature at each of the cycle process change points (16)
(b) The heat transferred to the air (2)
(c) The ideal thermal efficiency (4)
(d) The work done for the cycle (3)
(e) The entropy for the cycle ((5)

Question 2 [10]

Calculate the compressibility factor and pressure for 1 gmol of methanol vapour at 500 K and 0.3m 3
by using the following equations.
(a) Truncated form of virial equation (4)
(b) V/d Waals equation (6)

Experimental values of virial coefficients are, B = -2.19x10-4 m3/gmol; C = -1.73x10-8 m6/gmol2.

identify differences in the mathematical modelling.
