n=1 : an ∈ R} be the set of all real sequences. Prove that V is a vector
space over R.

2. Let V be the vector space of all functions from the real field F . Show that W is a
subspace of V (if not give counter example) where W consists of all

(a) Bounded Functions

(b) Even Functions
(c) Monotonically increasing functions

3. Let AX = B be a non homogeneous system of linear equations in n unknowns over a

field F . Show that the solution set W of the system is not a subspace of F n .

4. Write the polynomial f (t) = at2 + bt + c as a linear combination of the polynomials

p1 (t) = (t − 1)2 , p2 (t) = t − 1 , p3 (t) = 1.

5. Let
W1 = [(1, 0, 1), (2, 1, 3)], W2 = [(1, 2, 2), (2, 2, 1), (3, 0, 3), (2, 1, 2)]
be subspaces of R3 (R). Find the dimensions of W1 , W2 , W1 ∩ W2 ,
W1 + W2
(Ans: dim (W1 ) = 2, dim (W2 ) = 3, dim (W1 + W2 ) = 3, dim (W1 ∩ W2 ) = 2.)

6. Find a basis and

 dimension
 of the subspace
 W = {[aij]2×2 } of M2×2 spanned by
1 −5 1 1 2 −4 3 −4
A= ,B = ,C = ,D =
−4 2 −1 5 −5 7 4 −3

7. Extend the set of vectors {(1, 2, 3), (−4, 3, 1) to form the basis of R3 (R).

8. Determine whether the following vectors are Linearly Dependent or Linearly Independent.

(a) 2x3 + x2 + x + 1, x3 + 3x2 + x − 2 and x3 + 2x2 − x + 3

(b) e2x , x2 , x
(c) sin x, cos x, x
(d) x2 , x|x|

9. In a vector space R3 , let α1 = (1, 1, −1) ,α2 = (2, 3, −1), α3 = (3, 1, −5), β1 =
(1, −1, −3), β2 = (3, −2, −8) and β3 = (2, 1, −3). Show that the subspace spanned
by S = {α1 , α2 , α3 } and T = {β1 , β2 , β3 } are same. What you can conclude from this?

10. Let V = {f | f : R 7→ R} be the vector space of all functions over real numbers. Let

contained in the other.

12. Show that the set S = {(1, 0, 0), (1, 1, 0), (1, 1, 1), (0, 1, 0)} spans the vector space V3 (R)
