FE Internal Assessment-II

Assignment (Unit III and Unit IV)


Subject: Basic Electrical Engineering Date of submission: Apr 11th 2025

UNIT III

1. Derive the expression for RMS and Avg values of pure sine wave (6 or 8 marks)
2. If a single phase AC supply given by v = Vmsinωt is applied across a) pure inductor b)
pure capacitor. Obtain following for each case: i) Expression for instantaneous current
ii) Phasor diagram iii) Waveform diagram for voltage, current and power on common
axis. (6 marks)
3. Define i) Time period ii) frequency of alternating quantity iii) Form factor and peak
factor. (6 marks)
4. Explain the concept of lagging and leading quantity with the help of mathematical
equation, waveform diagram and phasor diagram. (6 marks)
5. The RMS value of 50 Hz sinusoidally varying alternating current is 20 A. Write the
expression for instantaneous value of current and find its value for
i) t= 0.0025 sec ii) t=0.0125 sec after passing through a positive maximum
value.
At what time, measured from a positive maximum value, will the instantaneous
current be 14.14A? (8 marks)
6. Convert polar to rectangular or rectangular to polar form (6marks)

a) 5+j10 b) 6-j8 c) 5<-36.870

7. The RMS value of 50 Hz sinusoidally varying alternating current is 10 A.


Write the expression for instantaneous value of current and find its value for

i) t= 0.0015 sec ii) t=0.0075 sec after passing through zero and then
increasing negatively. (8 marks)
UNIT IV

1. Derive expression for current and power when v = Vmsinωt is applied across RL
series circuit. Also draw waveform for voltage current and power on common axis (6
marks)
2. Derive expression for instantaneous power and average power power in series RC
circuit excited by purely sinusoidal voltage. Also draw waveform for voltage, current
and power on common axis. (6 marks)
3. Obtain the relationship between line and phase current and line and phase voltage for
3ph star connected balanced inductive load with the help of neat circuit digram and
phasor diagram.(6 or 8 marks)
4. Draw circuit diagram of delta load (R C type) connected across three phase balanced
supply and derive relation between line and phase current and line and phase voltage.
Also draw phasor diagram. (6 or 8 marks)
5. Derive expression for Resonance frequency with diagram( 6 marks)
6. Explain impedance and represent it in polar and rectangular form for RL and RC
series circuit. Also draw impedance triangle for both cases. (6 or 8 marks)
7. Define various types of power in AC circuit. Also draw power triangle.(6 or 8 marks)
8. Compare star connection and delta connection in 3 ph circuits (6 marks)
9. State advantages of 3 phase over single phase system (6 marks)
10. Define i) Balanced and unbalanced load ii) Line voltage and phase voltage
iii) Symmetrical system (6 marks)
11. A series circuit, consist of resistance of 10 Ω and inductance of 0.1 H connected
across single phase 50 Hz AC supply. If the voltage across resistance is 50 V calculate
i) voltage drop across inductance ii) supply voltage iii) Active and reactive
power (8 marks)
12. A series circuit with resistance of 10 Ω, inductance of 0.2 H and capacitance of 40 µF
is supplied with a 100 V supply at variable frequency. Find i) Resonance frequency.
ii) At resonance current, Power and Power factor. iii) Voltage across resistance,
inductance and capacitance. (8 marks)
13. Three identical impedance each of 25 + j40 are connected in star across 3 phase,
415V, 50 Hz supply. Calculate: i) Line voltage and phase voltage ii) line current and
phase current iii) Power factor iv) Total real and reactive power. (8 marks)
