-The basic characteristics of all religions are similar. There is a firm belief in a higher, unseen
controlling power. Religion appears to be a psychological necessity for mankind.
-the World Health Organization (WHO) conceptualizes mental health as a state of well-being in
which the individual realizes his or her abilities, and can cope with the normal stresses of life,
work productively, and contribute to his or her community.
-The first reference to any spiritual/religious in health care is
in the fourth edition (1994) of the Psychiatric Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual (DSM), labeled as “Religious or Spiritual
Problem” (Code V62.89).
-While medication will work whether or not one believes in
spiritual/religious well-being, having additional support can
help individuals maximize their health and well-being and
desire to continue and engage in care and treatment.
-There is a need to develop health systems that merge the best of two worlds and are centered
on qualities and values such as integrity, justice, kindness, and cooperation.
-An adequate definition of religion must satisfy two prerequisit The first of these is that, to meet
the requirements of logic, it m be exactly coextensive with the term defined.3 It must incl all
varieties of all religions in the past as well as the present, an all of the logically possible forms
that religions may conceivabl assume in the future, no matter whether we believe these form to
be desirable or undesirable, uplifting or degrading, true or fal It must be thoroughly impersonal

Islam values the importance of good mental health and emotional
wellbeing. The Qur'an can be used as a guide to those suffering from
emotional distress and aims to lead people to a meaningful quality of
life. 'There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has
created its treatment' (Hadith).
If the language is destructive or causes harm, the longer we are likely to ruminate on it. This can
lead to damage to key structures that regulate our memory, feelings and emotions. This in turn
will lead to disrupted sleep, a change in appetite and ability to feel happy.
Each time we vocalise this negativity, more chemicals are released in our brain, increasing
anxiety and irritability. This is the way cognitive neuroscience explains how destructive thought
patterns and language can affect one's mental wellbeing.

EXAMPLES
Prophet ﷺhimself experienced grief so intense after the passing of his beloved wife
Khadijah (R.A.) and his uncle, Abu Talib, paired with the social and economic boycott of
Mulims in Makkah, that the entire year was coined The Year of Sorrow.
Prophet Yaqub (A.S.) suffered prolonged period of grief such that his eyesight weakened,
some scholars even say to the point of blindness
And he turned away from them and said: “Alas, my grief for Yusuf (Joseph)!” And he lost his
sight because of the sorrow that he was suppressing.” – (Surah Yusuf, Ayah 84)
In the Quran, Allah mentions the importance of managing grief and coping with stress. The
Prophet ﷺexperienced a decline in his health as he was affected by concern for those who
opposed Islam in Makkah and so, Allah revealed the ayah:
“Perhaps, you, would kill yourself (O Muhammad SAW) in grief, over their footsteps (for their
turning away from you), because they believe not in this narration (the Quran).” – (Surah Kahf,
Ayah 7)
