Module 1: Computer Applications & Socio-Economic Implications

1.1 Introduction
Computer Science is central in modern society. A computer system = hardware + software + users
working together to process data into information.

1.2 Types of Computers


- Supercomputers – very powerful, used in weather forecasting and scientific research.
- Mainframes – large organizations (banks, airlines) for bulk data processing.
- Minicomputers – medium-sized organizations.
- Microcomputers (PCs) – homes, schools, offices.
- Mobile devices – smartphones, tablets.

1.3 Computer Hardware


- Input devices: keyboard, mouse, scanner.
- Processing devices: CPU (CU + ALU + registers).
- Output devices: monitor, printer, speakers.
- Storage devices: HDD, SSD, USB.
- Peripheral devices: projector, external HDD.

1.4 Software Applications
