Lesson USING PHRASES APPROPRIATELY AND
MEANINGFULLY
Before one can make a short story, he/she must first learn basic knowledge in
sentence construction, which includes familiarizing oneself with different kinds of
phrases and clauses that can be used in writing.
Phrase and clause are the most important elements of English grammar.
Phrase and clause cover anything a sentence has. Clause is the center of a sentence
and phrases strengthen the sentence to become meaningful. If the clauses are the
pillars of a building, the phrases are the bricks. A phrase usually is always present with
a clause, but a phrase cannot have a clause in it.

What IS IT
What is a Phrase?
Unlike a sentence, a phrase does NOT have a subject or a verb. However, a
phrase is a group of related words that acts as a single part of speech.
Examples: A beautiful home
Above the clouds
Dancing in the rain
The examples above are group of words that don’t have a subject-verb
combination. They don’t express complete meaning if used alone. But a phrase,
when added to a sentence may perform different functions.
Examples: I will build a beautiful home.
The birds are soaring and flying above the clouds.
The children enjoy dancing in the rain.
What are the Six Common Types of Phrases?
Depending on the functions it performs in a given sentence, phrase is
divided into 6 types: noun phrase, verb phrase, prepositional phrase, infinitive
phrase, gerund phrase, and participial phrase.
Noun Phrase
A noun phrase consists of a noun and all of its modifiers, which appear
either before or after the noun. It can function as a subject, object, or
complement in the sentence.
Examples: A simple dimple appeared on her face.
Noun modifier noun
Her departure made us sad.
Noun modifier noun
Verb Phrase
A verb phrase includes a main verb and its helping verbs. It can function
only as a predicate of a sentence.
Examples: She will be eating with her family.
helping verb main verb
The farmer was resting in his nipa hut.
helping verb main verb
7
Prepositional Phrase
A prepositional phrase always begins with a preposition followed by its
object and its modifiers. It can function as an adjective or adverb, but it can
function as a noun as well.
The following is a list of common prepositions. Notice that some
prepositions are more than one word.
Common Prepositions
about among between except near since up
above around beside for of through upon
according to at between from off to up to
across because of beyond in on toward with
after before by inside out of under within
against below down into over underneath without
along beneath during like past until behind
Examples: The story of “Juan Tamad” is interesting.
Preposition noun
The students walked through the gate.
Preposition noun
Gerund Phrases
A gerund is a form of a verb that always ends in –ing. A gerund phrase
consists of a gerund and its modifiers, objects, or complements. It always functions
as a noun.
Examples: Wearing face mask is very important.
Gerund object
One of my hobbies is reading fiction stories.
Gerund object
8
Infinitive Phrases
In infinitive phrase consists of an infinitive and its modifiers, objects, or
complements. It always starts with the word “to” and it functions as a noun, an
adjective, or an adverb.
Examples: To visit Boracay is one of my biggest dreams.
Infinitive object
My father told me to walk faster.
