(M-Au) Good afternoon, Ms. Clark. Please sit down. My name is Robert Wilson and I'm
the director of human resources. I understand you're applying for the position of
accounts manager?
(W-Br) Yes, that's right.
(M-Au) Great! Can you tell me about your work experience?
(W-Br) Sure, I'm currently working as an accounts manager in a large pharmaceutical
company. Before that I managed the sales accounts for a sporting goods
company. Altogether, I have had over eight years of working with many
different types of businesses.
(M-Au) Alright, may I ask you why you're interested in working for Hanson Electronics?
(W-Br) Well, I've been working in my present job for three years now. I just don't feel
I'm making progress. It's time to move on. I did some research on your
company, and I thought we would make a good match because your company
has a strong focus on customer service, and I've worked in that area for many
years.
(M-Au) OK, in this position there will be a need for a lot of teamwork. Do you work well
with other people?
(W-Br) Oh, yes! I enjoy working in groups. I'm also good at meeting deadlines and am
prepared to work overtime when necessary.
(M-Au) Well, thank you very much for coming in today. I'll be in touch.

As you all know from my previous e-mail, our accounts manager, Mr. Philips, is retiring at the end of the
month. Mr. Philips has been at Hanson Electronics for 35 years. To wish him well in the future, we want
to invite you to a farewell party for him in the main conference room on Friday at 5 P.M., directly after
work. Drinks and light refreshments will be served.
We will present Mr. Philips with a retirement gift at the party. Belinda Hill, from customer services, has
designed a card that she will give to him from us all. Please stop by her office any day before Friday to
sign it.

Step 1: Explore
Preparing for Part 1: Photographs
In this part of the test you will see photographs of people, places, objects, and actions. You will hear a
speaker make four statements about each of the photographs. Only one statement correctly describes what
you can see in the photograph.
It is much easier to listen to spoken English when you have an idea of what you are going to hear. While you
are waiting to hear the answer choices for the Photographs section, you should look at the photograph and
think about what you see in the picture.
Ask yourself these questions:
Tip
In the listening comprehension section you will hear authentic English speech. The speakers you will hear in
Part 1 will use informal English, including contractions. Make sure you are familiar with the following
forms: he's, she's, it's, they're, and there's.
Tip
While it is not necessary for you to speak English using contractions such as I'll, it'll, she's, and he's, it will help
you to understand spoken English if you can recognize these forms. In spoken English, important information
is stressed, and the words in between the stresses are often contracted or reduced. An example of reduced
language is going to shortened to gonna. "I'm gonna go" means "I am going to go." Understanding these
shortened forms will help you in the real world.

Unit 2: Offices
(M-Cn) Hello. This is Tony Barker speaking from Haxley's Office Supplies. I'm calling
about your order for new desks.
(W-Am) Oh. Have they arrived already?
(M-Cn) Well, yes, they have. But I'm afraid there is a problem.
(W-Am) Oh, what's the problem?
(M-Cn) The desks are the wrong color. They are in dark brown wood instead of the
light brown wood you ordered.
(W-Am) That's not good news. We specifically requested the light brown desks.
(M-Cn) I know. I'm very sorry. I can send them back, but it usually takes three weeks
for a new order to arrive.
(W-Am) I need to check with the head of my department. In the meantime, don't return
the desks until I talk to him. I'll call you later today and let you know what to
do.
(M-Cn) OK. Thanks for being so understanding. Again, I apologize for this
inconvenience.

(M-Cn)

My Planet Friendly's store manager, Bayani Kazuki, told our reporter, 'Our goods are of a very
high standard and meet strict quality control requirements. In addition, we are pleased to be
playing our part in protecting the environment.' However, when asked about the price of his
goods, Kazuki said, 'It's expensive to recycle materials. At the moment, producing goods from
recycled materials is slightly more expensive than regular disposables and office stationery. In
time, our prices will get lower and be more affordable. Try calling our store to get more
information.'

Step 1: Explore
Read the explanations to help you prepare for the TOEIC ® Test. When you are done,
continue to the Practice section.
Preparing for Part 3: Conversations
Visualizing the setting
In this part of the test you will hear some conversations between two or three people.
You will be asked to answer three questions about the conversation.
Some of the questions in this part are about specific details in the conversations.
However, for other types of questions you will need to visualize the setting of the
conversation and identify the speakers. You may not hear the answer to the question
directly stated in the conversation.
If you have time, try to read the questions before you listen to the conversation.
Reading the question first can help you focus your listening and give you some idea of
what the conversation is about.
Tip
Remember that the test is measuring skills you'll need in the real world. You can use
these same strategies to understand the purpose and context of conversations that you
hear anywhere in English. The difference is that, instead of having questions to read,
you will have an idea in your mind about what you want to know from the conversation.
Step 2: Practice
Read the explanation again and do the tasks that follow. If you need help, use the
student tools.

(M-Cn) Good evening. My name is Andre and I'll be your waiter this evening. Would
you like something to drink?
(W-Am) Hi, Andre. I'm waiting for a client, but I'll have a mineral water in the
meantime.
(M-Cn) Sure, I'll get that for you right away. Before I do, may I tell you about today's
specials?
(W-Am) Yes, that'd be nice.
(M-Cn) Our soup of the day is cream of mushroom, and it's delicious. For the main
dish, we have steak tartare and we also have fresh salmon brought in from
Norway.
(W-Am) That sounds good. Do you have any vegetarian dishes? I don't think my client
eats meat.
(M-Cn) Yes, we have a cheese and spinach lasagna and we also have a vegetable
risotto and salads.
(W-Am) Good. It sounds like you have an excellent vegetarian selection.
(M-Cn) Yes, yes we do. Many people come especially for our vegetarian dishes. I'll give

In this part of the test you will hear several short talks consisting of authentic examples of spoken
English from workplace, travel and leisure related situations. The talks will vary in level of formality and
will include such spoken language as announcements, introductions to meetings, and short speeches.
In order to answer some of the questions in this part you will need to visualize the setting of the talk and
identify the speaker. You may not hear the answer to the question directly stated in the conversation.
Pay special attention to the introduction and first part of the talk. Before each talk begins you will hear a
short introductory sentence such as: "Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following excerpt from a
meeting." This sentence helps you visualize the setting of the talk. For instance, if the talk is an excerpt
from a meeting it is probably taking place in an office or meeting room.
Tip
Listen to the whole talk before answering the questions. There may be some important information at
the end of the talk, so don't try to answer the questions until you have heard the whole talk.
Tip
If you hear an announcement or talk in the real world, think about what you want to know from the
speaker and listen for key words. The setting of the talk and the speaker's purpose will help you to
decide what information will be useful to you.
