(M-Au) Good afternoon, Ms. Clark. Please sit down. My name is Robert Wilson and I'm
the director of human resources. I understand you're applying for the position of
accounts manager?
(W-Br) Yes, that's right.
(M-Au) Great! Can you tell me about your work experience?

(W-Br) Well, I've been working in my present job for three years now. I just don't feel
I'm making progress. It's time to move on. I did some research on your

years.

with other people?

prepared to work overtime when necessary.

Lesson 4: Preparing for Part 1: Photographs

Step 1: Explore
Preparing for Part 1: Photographs

Thinking about the photograph

In this part of the test you will see photographs of people, places, objects, and actions. You will hear a
speaker make four statements about each of the photographs. Only one statement correctly describes what
you can see in the photograph.

It is much easier to listen to spoken English when you have an idea of what you are going to hear. While you
are waiting to hear the answer choices for the Photographs section, you should look at the photograph and
think about what you see in the picture.
Ask yourself these questions:

Where was the picture taken?

Who are the people in the picture?

What is happening in the picture?

Tip

In the listening comprehension section you will hear authentic English speech. The speakers you will hear in
Part 1 will use informal English, including contractions. Make sure you are familiar with the following
forms: he's, she's, it's, they're, and there's.

Tip

While it is not necessary for you to speak English using contractions such as I'll, it'll, she's, and he's, it will help
you to understand spoken English if you can recognize these forms. In spoken English, important information
is stressed, and the words in between the stresses are often contracted or reduced. An example of reduced
language is going to shortened to gonna. "I'm gonna go" means "I am going to go." Understanding these
shortened forms will help you in the real world.

Module 1: High-beginner
Unit 2: Offices
(M-Cn) Hello. This is Tony Barker speaking from Haxley's Office Supplies. I'm calling
about your order for new desks.
(W-Am) Oh. Have they arrived already?
(M-Cn) Well, yes, they have. But I'm afraid there is a problem.
(W-Am) Oh, what's the problem?
(M-Cn) The desks are the wrong color. They are in dark brown wood instead of the
light brown wood you ordered.
(W-Am) That's not good news. We specifically requested the light brown desks.
(M-Cn) I know. I'm very sorry. I can send them back, but it usually takes three weeks
for a new order to arrive.
(W-Am) I need to check with the head of my department. In the meantime, don't return
the desks until I talk to him. I'll call you later today and let you know what to
do.
(M-Cn) OK. Thanks for being so understanding. Again, I apologize for this
inconvenience.

(M-Cn)
ĐƯỢC RỒI. Cảm ơn vì đã rất hiểu biết. Một lần nữa, tôi xin lỗi vì sự bất tiện này.

I think that dark blue carpet would look good in the office hallway.

Let's check with the head of department and see what he thinks.

Your order for new paper will probably arrive next week.

Đơn đặt hàng giấy mới của bạn có thể sẽ đến vào tuần tới.

followed by three responses from another speaker.
Many of the questions in this section are asking for specific information.
Ask yourself: What information is the speaker asking for?
Time: What time/When is your flight to London?

Lesson 3: Article: My Planet Friendly

New Store Sells ONLY Goods Made from Recycled Materials
By our Environmental Correspondent, Ellen Jameson
Los Angeles: A new store for home and office essentials has opened on 41 Aragon Street. My
Planet Friendly sells cups for hot and cold beverages, utensils, plates, dishes, baking pans,
napkins, and paper towels, all made from recycled paper or plastic. The store also sells office
stationery, greeting cards, wrapping paper, and a selection of gifts made from recycled paper.

My Planet Friendly's store manager, Bayani Kazuki, told our reporter, 'Our goods are of a very
high standard and meet strict quality control requirements. In addition, we are pleased to be
playing our part in protecting the environment.' However, when asked about the price of his
goods, Kazuki said, 'It's expensive to recycle materials. At the moment, producing goods from
recycled materials is slightly more expensive than regular disposables and office stationery. In
time, our prices will get lower and be more affordable. Try calling our store to get more
information.'

You can see the wide range of goods on My Planet Friendly's Web site,
[Link]. Goods can also be purchased online or by calling 561-555-0120.

correct verbs from the bank below into place. There are more verbs than you need.

To explain how to recycle materials

To compare the prices of different products

To describe the renovation of a store

They are environmentally friendly.

Step 3: Test

Choose the correct answer.

Lesson 4: Preparing for Part 3: Conversations

Step 1: Explore

Read the explanations to help you prepare for the TOEIC ® Test. When you are done,
continue to the Practice section.
Preparing for Part 3: Conversations
Visualizing the setting
In this part of the test you will hear some conversations between two or three people.
You will be asked to answer three questions about the conversation.

Some of the questions in this part are about specific details in the conversations.
However, for other types of questions you will need to visualize the setting of the
conversation and identify the speakers. You may not hear the answer to the question
directly stated in the conversation.

As you listen to the conversations, ask yourself the following questions:

Who are the speakers?

Where are the speakers?
What are they doing?
What is their relationship?
Certain vocabulary words in the conversation can also help you work out the setting. For
example, if you hear the words: computer, e-mail, meeting, desk you might guess that
the conversation takes place in an office.
The wording of the test question can also help you understand the topic of the
conversation. For example, if you read the question: What treatment does the doctor
suggest? you might guess that the speaker works in a hospital or clinic.
Tip

If you have time, try to read the questions before you listen to the conversation.
Reading the question first can help you focus your listening and give you some idea of
what the conversation is about.

Tip

Remember that the test is measuring skills you'll need in the real world. You can use
these same strategies to understand the purpose and context of conversations that you
hear anywhere in English. The difference is that, instead of having questions to read,
you will have an idea in your mind about what you want to know from the conversation.

Step 2: Practice

Read the explanation again and do the tasks that follow. If you need help, use the
student tools.

Where do these people probably work? Match the occupation to the

setting by dragging the correct words from the bank below to the
appropriate [Link] are more occupations than you need.
Listen to the conversation and select the sentences that you think are
true. Then listen again, and think about why you made each choice.
What were the clues you used?
Listen to the conversation and answer the questions that follow.

Lesson 4: Preparing for Part 4: Talks

Step 1: Explore

Preparing for Part 4: Talks

Visualizing the setting

In this part of the test you will hear several short talks consisting of authentic examples of spoken
English from workplace, travel and leisure related situations. The talks will vary in level of formality and
will include such spoken language as announcements, introductions to meetings, and short speeches.

In order to answer some of the questions in this part you will need to visualize the setting of the talk and
identify the speaker. You may not hear the answer to the question directly stated in the conversation.

As you listen to the talk, ask yourself the following questions:

Where is the talk taking place?

Who is the speaker?

Who are the listeners?

What is the purpose of the talk?

Pay special attention to the introduction and first part of the talk. Before each talk begins you will hear a
short introductory sentence such as: "Questions 92 through 94 refer to the following excerpt from a
meeting." This sentence helps you visualize the setting of the talk. For instance, if the talk is an excerpt
from a meeting it is probably taking place in an office or meeting room.

Tip
Listen to the whole talk before answering the questions. There may be some important information at
the end of the talk, so don't try to answer the questions until you have heard the whole talk.

Tip

If you hear an announcement or talk in the real world, think about what you want to know from the
speaker and listen for key words. The setting of the talk and the speaker's purpose will help you to
decide what information will be useful to you.
