Practical 1: Installation and Configuration of
Scanner
Aim:
To study, install, and configure a scanner for converting physical documents or images into digital
format.
Apparatus / Requirements:
- Flatbed or handheld scanner / Multifunction printer with scan option
- Computer or Laptop with Windows operating system
- Scanner driver CD or downloaded driver/software
- USB cable / Wireless network connection
Theory:
A scanner is an input device that captures images, text, or graphics from physical documents and
converts them into digital form. Scanners work on the principle of optical recognition, using light
sensors (CCD or CIS) to read data. The digital copy produced can be stored, edited, or transmitted
electronically.
To function properly, a scanner requires a driver and scanning software:
- The driver allows communication between the scanner hardware and the operating system.
- The software provides an interface to control settings such as resolution, color, and file format.
Types of Scanners:
1. Flatbed Scanner
2. Handheld Scanner
3. Sheet-fed Scanner
4. Drum Scanner
Advantages:
- Converts hard copies to soft copies quickly
- Useful for record keeping and sharing
- Preserves quality of important documents
- Allows image editing and digital storage
Procedure:
1. Connect the scanner to the computer using USB cable or wireless connection.
2. Switch on both devices.
3. Install drivers from CD/website.
4. Run setup and follow instructions.
5. Restart system if required.
6. Verify installation in Control Panel.
7. Place a document/photo on the scanner bed.
8. Open scanning software, select settings.
9. Click scan and save the file.
Observation:
Scanner was detected and test scanning performed successfully.
Result:
Scanner was installed and configured successfully.
Conclusion:
Learned installation and configuration of a scanner, converting physical documents into digital form
efficiently.
Practical 2: Setting and Configuring Input/Output
Devices
Aim:
To study, set, and configure input/output devices such as monitor/display, speakers, microphone,
and LCD projector.
Apparatus / Requirements:
- Computer system
- Monitor / Display
- Speakers
- Microphone / Headset
- LCD Projector
- Cables (VGA/HDMI/Audio/USB)
Theory:
Input/Output devices are essential for user-computer interaction.
- Monitor: Displays text, images, and videos.
- Speakers: Output device that plays sound.
- Microphone: Captures audio input.
- LCD Projector: Projects the computer screen onto larger surfaces.
Proper configuration ensures effective use and clear communication between devices.
Procedure:
1. Connect monitor via VGA/HDMI and adjust settings.
2. Connect speakers and configure playback device.
3. Connect microphone, configure recording device.
4. Connect projector, select duplicate/extend, adjust brightness.
Observation:
Devices were connected, detected, and tested successfully.
Result:
All input/output devices were set and configured properly.
Conclusion:
Practical demonstrated setup of display, audio, and projection devices for smooth interaction with
the computer.
Practical 3: Connecting Devices to External Ports
Aim:
To study and practice connecting and disconnecting devices like LAN cable, external hard disk,
modem, and LCD/DLP projector.
Apparatus / Requirements:
- Computer/Laptop
- LAN Cable
- External Hard Disk
- Modem/Router
- LCD/DLP Projector
- Suitable cables
Theory:
External ports connect computers to peripheral devices.
- LAN Cable: Provides network and internet access.
- External Hard Disk: Portable storage for data backup.
- Modem: Enables internet by modulating/demodulating signals.
- LCD/DLP Projector: Projects display for larger audience.
Advantages:
- Easy data transfer
- Reliable internet
- Presentation support
- Expanded functionality
Procedure:
1. Connect LAN cable, verify network settings.
2. Connect external hard disk via USB, access files, eject safely.
3. Connect modem via USB/Ethernet, configure, and test.
4. Connect projector, select display mode, adjust brightness.
Observation:
All devices connected, detected, and tested successfully.
Result:
External devices functioned as expected after proper connection.
Conclusion:
Practical gave hands-on experience of connecting and disconnecting devices to external ports
safely and effectively.
