5.3 FPD-17 Ver.2 unit

The electrometer section of the FPD consists of Ml and peripheral

components. This electrometer reduces the Ml output to a l/10 and
sends this output from CN2 to a recording device (data processing
device).
M3 is a hybrid IC incorporating a circuit that prevents signal satu-
ration in Ml. Excess signal is sent from M2’S output pin 7 to M3’s
pin 3. The signal activates relay K4, which then sends Ml’s input
current to M2’s pin 1.
The high-voltage power supply unit for the photomultiplier consists
of M101, QlOl, Q102, and peripheral components.
This power supply unit uses the +24V direct-current power supply ,, .;; y;:~4
.““~;~.~
+,
that the GC base unit generates for relays. .?‘-:5i”
The +24V is converted to a stable +15V power by the Ml01 3-ter- I, *“,:““‘~,y:
? __‘;.“)_
T
minal regulator (TA780 15).
The +15V power is sent to a multivibrator transformer consisting ‘$
of 4104, Q103, and TlOl, by which the electric power is converted 5
to an alternate current of 700V and about 22 kHz. This AC power 5
source is rectified by components DlOl through D104 to about G
P
-700V and sent to the output terminal.
R107 (10K) is inserted in the return side to prevent excess current
from flowing into the photomultiplier. RlO7 switches off QlOl
when a current of over 225@ fiows and turn off the converter
input. The resistance value of R107 on the return side is IOK. The
M102’s input voltage of 225mV. When the voltage at the ends of
R107 exceeds 225mV, QlO5 is switched on and the base of QlO2 is
switched to L. This in turn switches off the DC/DC converter input
voltage and the high-voltage power supply. VRl (5K) inserted in
the base of Q102 is for the tine adjustment of the high-voltage
power supply.

5.4.3 Electric circuit of ECD-17 Ver.2 controller control

The ECD control for GC-17A V2 is a linear ECD type. Figs. 5.4.3-
2 and 5.4.3-3 show a circuit diagram of ECD-17.
The carrier gas (N2) Inside the ECD cell is ionized by radiation
from the radiation source (Nz) sealed inside the cell. When pulse
voltage is applied to the electrode inside the cell, electrons are
taken in to create a flow of electric current. The electrode is con-
nected with the input terminal (CN-2) of the ECD controller.
When the carrier gas includes no sample, a prescribed current flows
so that the input of the amplifier Ml of ECD-17 remains at OV. Ml,
as illustrated in Fig. 5.4.3-2, is designed as an integrating amplifier.
When there is no sample, its output remains at OV. Two operational
amplifiers of M2 are connected to the output side of Ml. The M2
amplifier at the output terminal 1 is a phaseinverting amplifier for
picking up signals. The M2 amplifier is designed so that the signal
output turns to + when Ml output changes to -. The amplification
degree of this amplifier is 1, which means that Ml output inverts.
On the other hand, the operational amplifier M2 at the output ter-
minal 7 functions as a buffer amplifier of M3. However, since the
A3 input requires a voltage input on the + side, this amplifier is
also used as a phase-inverting amplifier. The degree of amplifica-
tion is set at 1.

M3 is a V/F converter, that generates pulse voltage in proportion to

input voltage. Since the duty cycle of this pulse voltage is very
small, the pulse width required for the cell must be provided. A
mono-stable multivibrator (M4 l/2) is used to expand the pulse
width, irrespective of the frequency of the pulse voltage. This pulse
width is determined by C IO and R 17.
M5 is a buffer for the mono-stable multivibrator and drives Ql.
The range of the ECD controller is changed by altering the frequen-
cy of the pulse voltage. Therefore, a l/10 counter (M4) is provided
between the V/F converter and the monostable multivibrator is
changed to either l/l0 or l/l. --’

The circuit consisting of M20, M21, R4, and R5 generates a pulse

signal of about 100 kHz. This signal is amplified by Tl, Q6, 47,
QS, and Q9. (The amplification rate depends on the setting.) This
high-frequency signal is then supplied to the primary side of the
toroidal coil inside the FID eke&ode.
Ml0 receives a current of set value from the key unit. The output
signal generated in the FTD (FID) control unit enters CN4 and it is
amplified to about 20 times at Ml ‘S pin 3.
The setting signs1 from the key unit and the feedback signal from
the FTD (FID) control unit are compared by M2. M2’s pin 1 or
pin7 generates an output that correspons to the difference in the
input signals.
For example, when the feedback signal from the FTD (FID) control
unit is large, M2’s pin1 turns H. The signal then enters the DOWN
side of the UP/DOWN counter (M6) and the counter output is
reduced. On the other hand, when it is the setting signal that is
large, the signal enters the UP side of the UP/DOWN counter and
the counter output is incresed.
When both signals are about the same (i.e., feedback signal within
a range of 90 to 100% of the setting signal)., M2’s pins1 and 7 turn
L, and the UP/DOWN counter maintains the same value. At the
same time, the READY lamp on the power controller lights up. M7
is a D/A converter. It converts the UP/DOWN counter output to an
output within a range of 0 to 2.4V.
CN5’s pins 9 and 10 are normally short-circuited, so that M7’s out-
put is supplied to M3. M3’s pin1 generates an output ranging
between --2.5 to -4SV. The second-stage M3 switches the polari-
ties of the output to a range of +2.5 to +4.5V.
A one fifth of the pulse height (voltage) generated at components
Q6 through Q9 and the output voltage from M3’s pin 7 are com-
pared by M4. As a result, the pulse height of the output from CN3
is between 12.5 and 22.5V. The oscillating circuit consists of Ml4
and peripheral components, and it feeds signal to the UP/DOWN
counter.
The oscillating frequency can be varied by SW02 (DIP SW)
When SW02 (1) and (2) are both OFF :
6-set cycle
When SW02 (1) ON:
3-set cycle
When SW02 (2) ON :
300-msec cycle

Ml5 and peripheral circuits serve as the feedback ON/OFF circuit.

When the adjustment mode is “O,“(D) turns L and M17’s pin6 turns
L. Then the output of the UP/DOWN counterremains the same.
When the detector unit (Fid power controller) turns OFF, M15’s
pin5 turns H, switching Q4 ON and Ql OFF. This cuts off the out-
put voltage.

GC-17A Ver.2 SERVICE MANUAL m
6.3.1 Maintenance precautions
1. Make sure to turn off both the power switch of the GC-l7A
and main power supply to the equipment. (The same applies
to peripheral devices.)
2. Always make sure to close the hydrogen gas valve on the sup-
ply side before working on any equipment which use the gas.
3. Make sure to turn off the main valve on the supply side
before inspecting any flow system and never remove any
joint until the gas pressure completely decreases.
h!L
II\ If the gas flows in the reverse direction due to loosening the
joint before completely lowering the gas pressure, it may
result in a pressure control malfunction caused by dust and
external particles.
(A filter is installed in the primary side of the pressure con-
troller but not in the secondary side.)
4. When connecting a pipe, always hold the pipe in one hand
and manually tighten the joint with your other hand, making
sure it is correctly aligned. Following this, grip two wrench-
es with one hand, squeezing them together until the joint is
fully tightened. (Refer to Fig. 6.3.1- 1)
-\!!L
‘1, While only one wrench can be used to connect a pipe to a
firmly secured joint, it is recommended to use two wrenches
at all times.

Fig. 6.3.1-1 Method of using wrenches

5. Loosening of a joint or screw while they are hot may cause

scorching; therefore, make sure that the temperature is suffi-
ciently low before loosening them.

6-8
- GC-17A Ver.2 SERVICE MANUAL
6.3 GC general

6. For safety, do not put removed parts or screws on top of or

inside the equipment.
7. Insulators removed for the purpose of parts replacement
must be properly re-installed in their original position. When
the insulator for the column thermostatic oven has been
removed and re-installed, make sure that heat does not
escape from inside the thermostatic oven after the insulator
is re-installed.
8. When working on the temperature sensor or the heater unit
for the purpose of parts replacement, make sure that they are
properly in contact with the heat conductor block by taking
such measures as wrapping aluminum foil (cooking foil)
around them. Always check the resistance and insulation.
9. In the case of fuse replacement, always use parts with the .- ,_.’
specified capacity. j’~;.;&
\I,
7ir Use of improper parts may lead to an accident. ‘.“*r--z
/
10. Always make sure that the connector is adequately inserted. ’ ;x ”
Never loosen or tighten any joint of any section while it is still hot. z
The screw threads may become damaged and unusable due to EL
expansion of the joint section caused by heating. a”
Use a wet towel to quickly cool a desired section.
Squeeze together two wrenches as far as single-hand grip will allow.

6.3.2 Rephcing restrictor and septum

1) Cut off the tip of the septum placed at the injection port.

Cut here

2) Put a relatively thick syringe needle through the plug and

insert the tip of the restrictor (narrow tube) into the syringe
needle.

6-9
GC-17A Ver.2 SERVICE MANUAL I
6.3 GC general

3) Without removing the tip of restrictor from the syringe needle,

move the septum so as to let the restrictor pass through it.
(This is necessary since small pieces of the septum may other-
wise clog the restrictor.)

4) Put the entire component inside the housing.

N:h%ote2
Fig 6.3.2 Procedure for restrictor replacement

<<Note2+> 1. Be careful not to bend the restrictor when inserting it into the
joint.
2, Make sure to secure the designated length of the joint so that
it does not touch the end of the restrictor.

6.3.3 Inspection of rnoiecular sieve filter

The GC-I 7A V2 Series Gas Chromatograph equipped with an elec-
tronic flow controller is provided with a molecular sieve filter in its
carrier gas flow line.
This filter requires periodic aging.
The molecular sieve filter contains molecular sieve 5A. When the
filter is used for a long period of time in the flow line of the Gas
Chromatograph, the absorption capacity of the sieve gradually
decreases as it accumulates various impurities from the gas being
used. If the filter is continually used in the flow line without cor-
recting its reduced absorption capability, it may lead to a base line
fluctuation.
Therefore, it is necessary to perform heat aging once every 3 to 6
months by following the procedure described below.
0 Remove the molecular sieve filter installed in the carrier gas
flow line of the Gas Chromatograph using two 12-mm
wrenched. (Make sure to cool each thermostatic oven and

6-10
m GC-17A Ver.2 SERVICE MANUAL
6.3 GC general

stop the gas flow before removing the molecular sieve filter.)
@ Short-circuit the joints where the molecular sieve filter was
installed.
@ Remove the column from the column oven.
@ Install the molecular sieve filter to the INJ outlet using a
wrench, and firmly tighten it to prevent leakage.
@ Allow the carrier gas to flow at 40-50 ml/min. (N2 or He gas
can also be used.)
@ Heat the column oven to 34OC and maintain the tempera-
ture for more than 5 hours. (This procedure is called aging.)

<<Note>> Make sure that the carrier gas is flowing through the molecular fil-
ter during heat aging.

@ After completing the aging, cool the column oven to approx-

imately room temperature and stop the carrier gas flow
before removing the molecular sieve filter and re-installing it
into the original flow line. .-x
z
<<Note>> Never install or remove the joints to or from a heated section such b
as the molecular sieve filter and column until they have sufficiently 2

cooled. If joints are connected or disconnected while they are hot,

threads may become damaged due to the expansion of the joints. In
case work has to be performed as soon as possible, apply a wet
cloth to cool the joints sufficiently.,

6.3.4 Inspection of compressor and silica gel

The air compressor tank, which supplies air to the FID, tends to
accumulate dew condensation inside. Since the results of an FID
analysis are likely to be affected if this dew condensation is acci-
dentally supplied to the FID, make sure that the air fed to the
equipment is completely dry by placing a silica gel container
between the FID and the compressor for moisture removal. Silica
gel is blue when dry but turns red as it absorbs moisture. Red silica
gel should be replaced with fresh, blue silica gel. (Red silica gel
can be dried and reused by heating it in an oven.) Also be sure to
open the drain plug of the air compressor to remove water that has
accumulated in the tank at the end of the day.

6-11

6.3 GC general

6.3.5 Injection port septum

Since leakage may occur if the injection port septum is used over 20
or 30 times, be sure to replace it whenever necessary. Also note that
leakage may occur much sooner (i.e., after only several times of use)
when a syringe needle thither than a regular micro-syringe is used.
Please note that any damaged or bent syringe needle tip can severe-
ly damage the septum.
It is recommended to use a proper septum in accordance with the
temperature of the injection port.
Low-bleed septum (green) * * * * injection port temperature
of above 300 “C(heat-resist-
ing septum)
Silicon septum (cream) * * * * * injection port temperature
of below 300 “C

Change the septum by following the procedure described below.

(1) Press the [S] and [E] keys if the equipment is

in operating mode. The temperature control operation stops
after the indicated STOP TIME passes, and the carrier gas
stops when the indicated FLOW OFF TIME elapses from the
moment the temperature control stopped.

<<Note>> If the carrier gas is stopped while the column oven is still hot, it can
damage the column. Pay special attention when setting the FLOW
OFF TIME.
When the FLOW OFF TIME is set at 9999 (initial setting), press
the [%mJ (E] and [w] keys to stop the carri-
er gas after the temperature of the column oven lowers below 50 “C

(2) Make sure that the temperature of the injection port has suf-
ficiently lowered (below 100 “C ) before removing the sep-
tum securing nut by fingers as shown in Fig, 6.3.5-l.
After removing the nut, take out the needle guide and sep-
tum. (Do not turn the septum securing nut while it is hot, as
this can cause scorching.)

of the AK, the standard setting is 3 ml/min at 100 kPa.) 5
However, if the flow rate of the septum purge gas is too low, peak E

tailing and ghost peaks increase. If the septum purge gas flow rate
must be maintained at a low level, the septum should be aged at.
high temperature prior to use in order to minimize ghost peaks
resulting from the injection port septum.
The method of aging the injection port septum is as follows.

START

Turn the heater ON. When the READY lamp lights up, the
column oven starts increasing its inside temperature.
After the temperature has reached the specified setting, turn
OFF the power of the Gas Chromatograph. Then, when the
column oven has cooled down to room temperature, remove
the septums wrapped in the aluminum foil. (It will take about
1 hour for the oven to sufficiently cool down.)
Place the aged injection port septums in a clean bottle and
seal it tight for storage.

<<Note>> Be sure to lower the column inlet pressure before removing the
septum. if the septum is removed when the column inlet pressure is
still high, a sudden drop in pressure may cause silica wool to squirt
or oxygen to enter the column and cause oxidation.

Linear velocity and flow rate

The linear velocity indicates the distance (cm) that carrier gas trav-
els in the column in 1 second. The linear velocity indicated for the
GC-I 7A V2 is an average linear velocity speed in the column.
The average linear velocity can be obtained from the retention time
of methane in the following equation.

Average linear velocity V (cm/s) = Ltl<&\ ‘fs$i’

Where:

tx : Retention time of methane (min)

L : Length of column (m)

The column flow rate for the GC-17A V2 indicates the value that
has been converted to the under ambient temperature and atmo-
spheric pressure. It is equivalent to the value measured by a flow
meter connected the column outlet under ambient temperature.

Column flow rate (ml/min)

Carrier gas: Helium (20 ‘C )
