Part 1
Questions 1–6
1 The correct answer is B: Sebastian is asking Lisa if she can lend him some equipment:
‘Do you have a spare one (racket)?’ A is incorrect as Lisa already knows their match is taking
place at the sports club. C is also incorrect. Sebastian isn’t asking if Lisa is free to play
badminton today as they have already agreed to play this afternoon: ‘about our badminton
match … this afternoon’.
2 The correct answer is B: Dave is telling Mike that his mum can’t drive them to the beach.
He wants Mike to ask his father to give them a lift: ‘is your dad free?’ A is incorrect as Dave has
already checked the bus timetable online but there’s no bus to the beach on Saturday. C is also
incorrect because Dave isn’t asking Mike to find out the quickest route to get the beach.
3 The correct answer is C: Nancy forgot to make a note of what she needs to do: ‘I didn’t copy
down what our maths homework is for tomorrow.’ A is incorrect because Nancy hasn’t lost her
diary but would like Fred to have a look in his homework diary. B is also incorrect as Nancy
doesn’t need help with some difficult homework. Instead, she needs to find out what she must
do for their maths homework.
4 The correct answer is C: The times when you can visit the library will change soon: ‘from next
week the library will open at 8.00 and close at 5.30.’ A is incorrect as the sign says ‘speak to
staff about booking a school laptop’, but it doesn’t say staff won’t have much time to help you
next week. B is also incorrect because the sign doesn’t say to arrive early at the library to book a
laptop. It only says that laptops are available for students to book.
5 The correct answer is C: Students can invite visitors to come and enjoy the day: ‘Parents
and friends welcome’. A is incorrect because the School Sports Day won’t be cancelled if the
weather is bad. It will be held in the hall instead. B is also incorrect as the notice isn’t telling
students to come to the hall at 9.00 a.m., it is saying that the event starts at that time.
6 The correct answer is B: Mum is asking if Joe’s teacher helped him to understand his
homework: ‘Is it clear now what she wants?’. A is incorrect as Joe’s mum isn’t asking if his
homework has changed. She is asking if he knows what he has to do. C is also incorrect. Joe’s
mum is asking if Joe spoke to his teacher. Joe’s mum isn’t asking to speak to his teacher.

Part 2
Questions 7–13
7 The correct answer is A: Rhodri says it was easy to travel around in Rome: ‘We were able
to do lots of sightseeing because the taxis and buses and the metro were cheap and fast’.
B is incorrect. Patrick says sometimes walking around famous places was difficult. C is also
incorrect. Josh says it wasn’t easy travelling in Rome as he and his dad ‘waited until after the
sun went down to explore the city on foot’ because it was so hot.
8 The correct answer is A: Rhodri says he felt very excited before his holiday to Rome: ‘I
couldn’t wait to go’. B and C are incorrect. Neither Patrick or Josh talk about how they felt
before their holiday. In both of their texts, they only describe what happened during their
holidays.
9 The correct answer is B: Patrick says there was a lot of traffic in Rome: ‘all the cars and
buses in the city sometimes made walking difficult.’ A is incorrect. Rhodri only says the different
types of transport (taxis, buses, metro) in Rome made travelling easy. C is incorrect. Josh
doesn’t talk about the traffic in Rome at all in his text.
10 The correct answer is A: Rhodri says he prepared carefully for his trip: ‘I found out all I could
about Rome from the library and on the internet.’ B and C are incorrect. Neither Patrick or Josh
mention preparing for their trip to Rome carefully.
11 The correct answer is C: Josh’s favourite food on the trip was Italian ice cream: ‘I had some
Italian ice cream, called ‘gelato’, for the first time. That was the thing I liked most.’ A is incorrect.
Rhodri’s text doesn’t include any information about food. B is incorrect. Patrick says ‘The Italians
have a special kind of ice cream called ‘gelato’… but the best thing I had was a pizza’.
12 The correct answer is B: Patrick bought some things to give as gifts because he says that
‘at a local market [he] also got some great things to take back for my friends.’ A and C are
incorrect. Neither Rhodri or Josh talk about buying things to give as gifts.
13 The correct answer is C: Josh took a short trip outside of Rome : ‘we decided to take a
train into the countryside for a day.’ A and B are incorrect. Neither Rhodri or Josh talk about
leaving Rome during their trips.

Questions 14–18
14 The correct answer is B: Ben wanted to have some new experiences during the year after
he left school: ‘and more than anything, try lots of things I’ve never done before.’ A is incorrect.
Ben wanted to improve at skiing but this is a sport he already knew how to do. C is also
incorrect as he wanted to make new friends rather than meet up with old friends.
15 The correct answer is C: Ben went to France to learn to speak French: ‘I’ve always loved
the French language and wanted to study it.’ A is incorrect as doing a cooking course isn’t the
reason Ben travelled to France. He became interested in French food and took some cooking
lessons while he was there. B is also incorrect because the farmhouse in the French countryside
is where he took the cooking lessons.
16 The correct answer is B: When Ben was in Australia, he lived with members of his family:
‘My cousins live … in Sydney, so I had somewhere to stay.’ A is incorrect as Ben got a job in a
hotel, but he didn’t live there. C is also incorrect. Ben lived near a river, and he and his cousins
spent a lot of time sailing in their boat but he didn’t live in the boat.
17 The correct answer is B: Ben changed his course in Japan to become a skiing teacher
because he knew he needed more practice: ‘I saw that I wasn’t actually that good, so I changed
to a seven-week one.’ A is incorrect because he doesn’t say he heard about a better course. C
is also incorrect as Ben didn’t attend the three-week course at all. Instead, he decided to change
to a longer course shortly after he arrived in Japan.
18 The correct answer is A: Ben says winter camping wasn’t pleasant at night: ‘it was cold,
so I can’t say I slept well!’ B is incorrect as Ben doesn’t say that he would love to do it again
soon. He does say that the other teachers are all planning to meet up soon but not to do winter
camping. C is also incorrect. Ben says winter camping was ‘quite interesting’, but this isn’t the
same as saying it’s the most interesting thing he’s ever done.

Part 4
Questions 19–24
19 The correct answer is B: ‘moved’ is the only option that collocates with ‘to’ which follows
the gap and has the correct meaning. A is incorrect as ‘changed’ doesn’t complete the meaning
of the sentence with the words following the gap: ‘to the US when he was a baby’. C is also
incorrect as ‘left’ doesn’t collocate with ‘to’.
20 The correct answer is C: ‘age’ is the correct word for this gap as it is the only noun that
explains how old Eric was when his love of skateboarding began. A and B are incorrect as they
don’t say how old someone is and don’t collocate with ‘of’ which follows the gap.
21 The correct answer is A: ‘practised’ is the only verb that completes the meaning of this
phrase with the words ‘by himself’. B is incorrect because it doesn’t make sense with ‘by’ which
follows the gap. C is also incorrect as this verb means to move behind someone and go where
they go. In the text, Eric practised ‘by himself’ which means he did this on his own.
22 The correct answer is B: ‘job’ is the only noun that collocates with ‘summer’. A is incorrect
as ‘career’ means an occupation that you do during a long part of your working life but this was
only ‘a summer job’. C is also incorrect as ‘work’ is an uncountable noun so ‘a summer work’ is
grammatically incorrect.
23 The correct answer is C: ‘decided’ is the only verb that collocates with ‘to’ which follows the
gap. A and B are incorrect because neither ‘thought’ or ‘felt’ collocate with ‘to’.
24 The correct answer is A: ‘won’ is the only past participle of an activity that would happen
at ‘international competitions’. B and C are incorrect. Neither ‘taken’ or ‘tried’ collocate with
‘competitions’ which follows the gap. You can ‘win/enter/lose competitions’, but you can’t
‘take/try competitions’.

Part 5
Questions 25–30
25 The correct answer is ‘as’: The word ‘as’ is needed after ‘as famous …’ because ‘as
+ adjective + as’ is a fixed phrase that is used to compare two things. In the text, Juan is
comparing his hometown Playa del Carmen to Cancun.
26 The correct answer is ‘the’: The word ‘the’ is needed before ‘most beautiful places’ because
Juan has written a superlative statement which follows the form: ‘the + most + adjective + noun’.
27 The correct answer is ‘all’: The word ‘all’ is needed to complete fixed phrase ‘all over
somewhere’ which means everywhere in a particular place. In the text, Juan is talking about
tourists from ‘all over the world’.
28 The correct answer is ‘In’: The word ‘In’ completes the fixed phrase ‘in fact’. This phrase is
being used to emphasise something that is true (Juan and his friends going to the beach almost
every day because the weather’s always warm).
29 The correct answer is ‘to’: The infinitive marker ‘to’ is needed in this gap to form a
grammatically correct question. The verb ‘want’ is always followed by ‘to + infinitive’: ‘Do you
want [to] know more about Playa del Carmen?’
30 The correct answer is ‘If’: The word ‘If’ is needed to say that something will only happen
after something else happens. In other words, Juan will give people more information about
Playa del Carmen if they write to him.
