In English, nouns can be countable (they have a singular and a plural form) or
uncountable (they don’t have a plural form).

I. Countable Nouns

a/one banana – three bananas

a/one baguette – two baguettes


an/one egg – a lot of eggs

II. Uncountable nouns


They only have one form. We can’t use one, two, three with uncountable nouns.

III. Quantifiers
When we want to talk about the quantity or number of something, we use words or expressions such
as A LOT OF/ LOTS OF, MUCH, MANY, A LITTLE, A FEW.

A LOT OF (or LOTS OF), MANY and MUCH


indicate a big quantity.

SOME indicate NOT a big quantity

(A) FEW and (A) LITTLE indicate a small quantity

We can use A LOT OF (or LOTS OF) and SOME with both countable and uncountable nouns.
But we use:

MUCH LITTLE

for COUNTABLE NOUNS for UNCOUNTABLE NOUNS
