INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
This paper consists of two examination items.
Answer one item in all.
Any additional items answered will not be scored.
Candidates are not allowed to start working with the apparatus for the first quarter of
an hour. This time is to enable candidates; read the items thoroughly, checking for the
apparatus they will need and plan appropriately.
A graph paper will be provided.
Mathematical tables and silent non-programmable calculators may be used.

Item 1
Your school wishes to buy glass blocks of refractive index between 1.4 and 1.6, to be
used during physics practical lessons. The DOS has received samples of glass blocks
from a supplier who claims that they are of the required range of refractive index. You
have been provided with the sample of the glass block that was delivered to the DOS
TASK
Help the Dos to verify what the supplier says and advise the school on whether or not to
buy the glass blocks.
Item 2
An elderly man who lives alone in his house sent a child from the neighborhood to buy
for him a quarter kilogram of sugar from the nearby shop. On returning with kg of sugar,
the elderly man looked at the sugar tied in a small white polythene bag and doubted its
quantity. A senior three learner while returning home from school found a serious
argument between the elderly man and the child he sent regarding the sugar the child
bought from the shop.
The learner tried to find a way of helping to settle the argument but failed.
TASK
As a learner of physics and assuming you are the one who found the elderly man and
the child arguing, carryout a scientific investigation to settle the argument.
