The Legend of Rice
(A Filipino Folk Tale)
A long time ago, the people in the lowlands had plenty of food. They planted
fruits and root crops and lived peacefully. But one year, a terrible drought came. The
sun shone so brightly that the soil cracked, the rivers dried up, and all the plants died.
The people became hungry and weak.
In one small village lived a kind and beautiful woman. Every day, she saw
children crying because they were hungry. She felt very sad for them. One night, she
prayed to the gods in heaven to help her people.
The next morning, she had a dream. In her dream, a gentle voice said, “If you
truly wish to help your people, you must give up your life. From your body will come a
plant that will feed them forever.”
The woman woke up afraid, but she loved her people so much that she decided
to do what the gods had said. She went to the field, knelt on the ground, and prayed
one last time. Then she closed her eyes and quietly disappeared.
After a few days, the villagers saw a strange green plant growing where the
woman had knelt. It grew tall and bore golden grains. They cooked the grains and
found them soft and delicious. The people called it rice.
From then on, rice became the main food of the people. They never went
hungry again, and they remembered the kind woman who gave her life so others
could live.
That is why, even today, Filipinos treat rice with respect and never waste a
single grain—because it came from love and sacrifice
