Renovation involves cleaning, decorating, and refurbishing buildings, often aiming to improve
energy efficiency and sustainability. Adaptation refers to modifying a building beyond regular
maintenance to enhance its capacity, function, and performance without full demolition.
Conversion involves changing the use or function of a space, such as turning a shop lot into
another facility. Adaptation also means adjusting buildings to meet new needs while preserving
structural features.

Various terms such as refurbishment, retrofitting, rehabilitation, renovation, and restoration are
used to describe building improvements. These terms often overlap, causing confusion about the
scope of work. A literature review identified common terms, and a definition framework was
developed to clarify building adaptation projects. This framework helps researchers and
practitioners define project scopes more precisely, avoiding costly confusion. Effective
refurbishment extends a building’s lifespan and supports a circular economy. Each building’s
unique features must be considered, and communication among stakeholders is key throughout a
project’s lifecycle.

Topography is the study of the shape and characteristics of the land surface. A topographic map not only
shows the surface features of an area but also shows the contours and approximate elevation of each
location, through various curved lines, each showing a single elevation. In other words, it shows a "three-
dimensional" picture on a two-dimensional surface. UTC Perak is a famous Perak urban transformation
center located in Pasar Besar Ipoh. It serves as a public facility center for the state. It is owned by the
Malaysian Government, and offers various services such as health, safety and more

According to our Perak UTC study, the area is urban. The surrounding area is generally an urban area for
public facilities and tourist destinations. In our observations in the area, the surface of the earth is flat and
has small hills. In addition, there are trees planted around the area to show that the place is more harmonious
and environmentally friendly, making it attractive and applying the green concept. In addition, around the
area there are buildings that are too tall and historic. With the topography and compact area this place is
suitable for economic development.

In October 2024, Ipoh experiences hot temperatures,
usually between 23°C at night and 30-33°C during the
day. This month is marked by frequent rains, with about
15 to 22 rainy days, making it quite wet overall. The
weather is typical of Ipoh's tropical climate, with high
humidity and occasional sunny spells. If you visit, it's a
good idea to prepare for both heat and rain.

In Ipoh, the weather in October 2024 is usually hot and rainy.

The daily high temperature can reach around 30-33°C, while the
lowest temperature drops to about 22-23°C. You can expect
frequent rain, with about 15 to 26 rainy days in a month,
accumulating up to 271-391 mm of rain. Humidity is quite high,
averaging between 79% and 86%, making it hotter. Sunlight is
limited to about 7-9 hours a day, so even if it rains frequently,
you'll still get sunshine.

If you want to go out, be prepared for both hot and rainy

weather, and don't forget to wear sun protection, because UV
levels can reach 6-7, creating a risk of skin damage at peak
times. 7
The sun rises in the east, usually between 6:50 AM and 7:10 AM throughout the
year. The building will receive morning sunlight from the east, which could be
more direct on the eastern facade.
Around noon, the sun will be positioned towards the south. Given Malaysia’s
proximity to the equator, the sun is almost directly overhead, making the
midday sunlight intense. South-facing facades will receive a significant amount
Evening Morning
of sunlight, which can impact the building’s cooling needs.
The sun sets in the west, typically between 7:00 PM and 7:20 PM. The western
facades of the UTC building will experience the strongest sunlight in the late
afternoon, leading to potential heat gain.

These months are characterized by light and variable winds, with no consistent
wind direction. During the inter-monsoon periods, localized factors like
temperature differences between day and night.
The urban layout around nearby buildings and narrow streets, may create
localized wind patterns. These structures can channel the wind along certain
paths or create sheltered areas, potentially altering the natural wind
orientation at street level. Additionally, the presence of trees and climbing
plants on the building can affect wind flow, providing some natural buffering.
