Systematically Analysing Indirect

Translations

This volume applies digital humanities methodologies to indirect

translations in testing the concatenation effect hypothesis.
The concatenation effect hypothesis suggests that indirect translations
tend to omit or alter identifiably foreign elements and also tend not to
identify themselves as translations. The book begins by introducing the
methodological framework to be applied in the chapters that follow and
providing an overview of the hypothesis. The various chapters focus on
specific aspects of the hypothesis that relate to specific linguistic, stylistic,
and visual features of indirect translations. These features provide evi-
dence that can be used to assess whether and to what extent the concat-
enation effect is in evidence in any given example.
The overarching aim of the book is not to demonstrate or falsify the
veracity of the concatenation effect hypothesis or to give any definitive
answers to the research questions posed. Rather, the aim is to pique the
curiosity and provoke the creativity of students and researchers in all
areas of translation studies who may never have considered indirect
translation as relevant to their work.

James Luke Hadley is Trinity College Dublin’s Ussher Assistant Professor

in Literary Translation and Director of the College’s MPhil in Literary
Translation. His research represents his wide-​ranging interests, many of

interests include machine translation and computer-​assisted translation
research, as well as integrating empirical research into translation studies.

1 The Vicarious Development

of Indirect Translation

Indirect translation is one of the topics in translation studies that has

attracted substantive interest only relatively recently (Ringmar 2007, 2).
Although not hitherto unknown both in the field and beyond, the practice
of translating translations is notable for having historically enjoyed very
little concentrated attention in its own right. While the subject has been
raised at various points throughout the history of translation studies,
the extent to which these mentions have developed our understanding
of indirect translation as a practice or as a phenomenon is debatable.
Rather, the pattern that appears to hold true until recent years is that
indirect translation has generally been discussed in the context of other
topics, texts, or groups of texts. Thus, some indirect translation research
informs the contexts in which particular indirect translations have been
produced, but it adds comparatively little to our knowledge of the indirect
translation phenomenon beyond another documented instance.
It could be that the historical lack of focus on indirect translation in
general, in contradistinction to other sub-​types of translation, such as
retranslation, arises from a combined sense that indirect translation is
a fringe, historical, or unusual practice and that, from the ethical point
of view of some, it does not represent best practice. Thus, indirect trans-
lation research has tended to advance slowly, as studies have effectively
been forced to grapple with the topic incidentally because it has proven

pivotal to the cases in question.

Coll-​Vinent (1998) discusses indirect translation in the context of
English literature finding its way into Catalan through French from the
nineteenth century until the early twentieth century. The conclusions to
this article dutifully mention the issue of ethics, in the sense of whether or
not indirect translation is acceptable. However, this issue is pushed aside
in favour of the cultural acceptability of the translations it produces:

The question that now arises, however, is not whether mediated

translation is right or wrong, or simply accepted as normal, but how
successfully translators managed to produce a valuable version of
