Towards an atlas of the history of interpreting: Voices from around the world is
conceived as a collective project that would have been the natural result of the
symposium Research on the history of interpreting: Voices from around the world.
This event, sponsored and financed by the prestigious Fonds National Suisse
(FNS), would have been held in Geneva in October 2020. Four years would have
elapsed since the publication of the book New Insights in the History of Inter-
preting (Takeda and Baigorri-Jalón 2016, with John Benjamins), a result of the
2014 Rikkyo symposium on the history of interpreting, which found continuity
in the 2017 conference organised by Minhua Liu at Hong Kong Baptist Univer-
sity. Unfortunately, the event in Geneva could not take place due to the outbreak
of the COVID 19 pandemic; an unprecedented event that forced us to adapt
to the new situation and, more broadly, to rethink the way in which we work,
meet and research. It was an event that served as an uncompassionate reminder
of how tightly interconnected the world is and how important it is to learn or,

even better, to have learned, from the past, in order to avoid making the same
mistakes in the present. The study of history is, and will continue to be, essen-
tial in our efforts to understand and carefully analyse past situations so as to
make better decisions in the present. This very same rationale can undoubtedly
be applied to interpreting, although historical studies in that field will never be
sufficiently numerous to understand interpreters’ roles and identities. In the cur-
rent circumstances, characterised by significant changes, knowing how our pre-
decessors adapted to new realities and coped with unprecedented challenges and
difficulties is invaluable.
While we are drafting these notes there are a number of signs which suggest
that the reflections made in this volume may be relevant not only for Interpreting
Studies but also for our societies in general. We are living in times of significant
change and uncertainty, brought about by phenomena such as the increasing
impacts of information and communication technologies, climate change or the
COVID 19 pandemic on our societies. As a result, the interpreting profession –
like many professions periodically do – is debating its future, a future marked
by changes which allow for an increasing use of remote interpreting as well as
the proliferation of machine translation tools, and by experiments in artificial
intelligence applied to interpreting. In this context, it is important to reflect on
how other types of social, political and technical changes and discontinuities have
been common components in the evolution of the interpreting act. The out-
comes of historical research, complemented with a variety of interdisciplinary
approaches, may have a positive influence both on interpreting training and edu-
cation – how the interpreting skills are administered and how the profession
evolves – and on the actual exercise of interpreting, as performed by practitioners.

Chapter 1. Voices from around the world 3
Among other initiatives in the context of that growing interest in the history
of interpreting and interpreters, the organisation of a number of itinerant exhibi-
tions by the University of Salamanca, by AIIC and others merit a mention, as they
fit into a historical commemorative approach, addressed to a wide, non-expert
audience, where interdisciplinarity is of the essence.1
Specific research has focused on the roles and duties of interpreters – includ-
ing ethical issues – along several axes: peaceful exchanges (such as trade or diplo-
macy), asymmetrical power relations (colonial empires, dissemination of culture,
ideologies and religions), and war and conflict (with their complexities). It is
worth noting that numerous historical records and narratives touching on the his-
tory of interpreting make reference, whether directly or indirectly, to conflict sit-
uations (e.g. Kurz 1985; Bowen and Bowen 1990; M. Bowen 1994; Gaiba 1998;
Roland 1999; Wilss 1999; Phelan 2001; Hermann 1956/2002; Lung 2011, 2016;
Delisle and Woodsworth 2012; Baigorri-Jalón 2015, 2019; Alonso Araguás 2016;
Lan 2016; Pym 2016; Ruiz Rosendo and Persaud 2016; Sarmiento Pérez 2016;
Takeda and Baigorri-Jalón 2016; Todorova and Ruiz Rosendo 2021; Rundle 2021;
Harrison 2021). As a matter of fact, the key role that conflicts have played in shap-
ing the interpreters’ roles and identities, as well as other professions such as med-
icine or engineering, is undeniable.
In parallel, using a combination of memory and historical records (see
Andres, Kaindl and Kurz 2017), interpreters involved in some historic events
(Ekvall 1960; Berezhkov 1994; Korchilov 1997; Palazchenko 1997; Ji 2008; among
others) have progressively contributed to the creation of a subgenre of personal
narratives, particularly in the case of those from the other side of the iron and
bamboo curtains (Baigorri-Jalón 2017). In most cases, trust was a key ingredient

in their agency as interpreters (Rizzi, Lang and Pym 2019). Whilst these personal
narratives are of great value to the history of interpreting, the past “can and should
be explored and reassessed with a fresh look by each generation and by each
researcher” (Takeda and Baigorri-Jalón 2016: viii).
Despite scholars’ growing interest in the history of interpreting and the rele-
vance of research in this field, to the extent that Wakabayashi (2004) has spoken
