Effective writing skills are essential for success in almost every field. It is the ability to
express our thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely. It is very important for everyone
including students, professionals, or simply someone who communicates frequently in
writing. Some of the key elements of good writing are as follows:

1. Clarity: Effective writing is clear concise, and easy to understand. It uses simple language
and has a logical flow of ideas. It should avoid using unnecessarily complex words, jargon
and technical terms or convoluted sentence structures that may be confusing to the reader.

2. Conciseness and Coherence: Effective writing is concise and coberent. It avoids


unnecessary words and phrases and gets straight to the point. Coherence is the ability to
connect ideas and sentences in a way that makes sense and flows smoothly.

3. Organization: Effective writing in well-organized and structured. It uses headings.

Paragraph Writing

A paragraph is a group of sentences that share a common topic or idea. It is a unit of writing

followed by supporting sentences that provide evidence or details to support the main idea.
The supporting sentences should be logically connected and flow smoothly from one to the
next. Finally, a concluding sentence should summarize the mam slea and provide a transition
to the next paragraph. A well-structured paragraph is an essential element of effective writing
and can make a significant difference in how well a piece of writing is understood and
received by the reader.

A paragraph typically consists of three parts:

Topic Sentence The topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the paragraph and
introduces the main idea or topic that the paragraph will discuss.

Supporting Sentences The supporting sentences provide evidence, examples, and details that
support the topic sentence and help to develop the main idea.

Concluding Sentence the concluding sentence is the last sentence of the paragraph and
summarizes the mam pomt or idea that was discussed, it may also provide a transition to the
next paragraph.
The five basic elements of a paragraph are:

1. Main idea (Topic Sentence)

Answers the question in your first sentence of the paragraph Does not contain the supporting
details

2. Completeness (Supporting Sentence)

Enough good supporting details (2-3 supporting details from facts, quotes, statics, etc) to hilly
prove your mam idea

3. Logical order

Write in the order you have in your main idea

4. Unity

There are no sentences that are off topic. All the sentences after the main idea is related to or
support your main idea

5. Coherence

The sentences should be in Logical order and the meaning should flow smoothly from one to
another, creating a clear and understandable connection. Sentences are thed together by
transitions.
Types of Paragraph

Majorly, there are four types of paragraph writing, i.e., narrative, descriptive, expository, and
persuasive.

1. Descriptive: This kind of writing basically describes the topic and appeals to the five
senses.

2. Narrative: These kinds of writing are basically a narration of a story or a situation that
includes a sequence.

3. Expository: These kinds of writing are a definition of something. These paragraphs require
a lot of research.

4. Persuasive: These kinds of writing am to make the audience admit a writer's point of view.
These are mostly used by the teachers to provide a strong argument

To indicate a logical relationship: accordingly, as a result, because, consequently, for this


reason, hence, it, otherwise, since, so, then, therefore, thus

Some questions that can help you write a good paragraph:

1. What is the main idea or topic that you want to convey in the paragraph?

2. Who is your audience, and what do they already know about the topic?

3. What is the purpose of the paragraph?

4. What are the key points that you want to make in the paragraph, and how do they support
your main idea?

5. What evidence or examples can you use to support your key pomis?

6. Are there any opposing viewpoints or counterarguments that you need to address?
7. How will you conclude the paragraph?

preferred modes of communication.

However, letters still have a major use and importance in our society, especially formal letters

FORMAL LETTER

A formal letter strictly follows the prescribed letter writing format. The use of colloquial
words, abbreviations, and slang language should be restricted while writing a formal letter.

A formal letter must be precise and to the point. The Subject line is very important in a
formal letter.
A formal letter is one written for official reasons. It is written in a formal language with
specific structure and layout. Such letters are written for official purposes to authorities,
dignitaries, colleagues, seniors, etc and not to personal contacts, friends or family.

A number of conventions must be adhered to while drafting formal letters.

A formal letter must follow certain rules and conventions. Such a format helps in relaying the
information in a professional way. It must be remembered that there are various such formats
for formal letters that people follow.

The one explained here is the one most commonly used for formal communication these
days. And today, we normally follow the block format where the entire text is aligned to the
left and single spaced.

Sender's Address: The sender's address is usually put on the top left-

hand corner of the page. The address should be complete and accurate in case the recipient of
the letter wishes to get in touch with the sender for further communication.

Date: The sender's address is followed by the date just below it. This is the date on which the
letter is being written. It is important in formal letters as they are often kept on record.

Receiver's Address: After leaving one line space we write the

receiver's address on the left side of the page. Whether to write "To" above the address
depends on the writer's preference. Make sure you write the official title/name/position etc of
the receiver, as the first line of the address.

Subject: After the salutation/greeting comes the subject of the letter. We sum up the purpose
of writing the letter in one line. This helps the receiver focus on the subject of the letter in one
glance.

Greeting: This is where you greet the person you are addressing the letter to. Bear in mind
that it is a formal letter, so the greeting must be respectful and not too personal. The general
greetings used in formal letters are "Sir" or "Madam" or 'Respected/Dear Sir'.
Body of the Letter: This is the main content of the letter. It is either

divided into three paragraphs. The purpose of the letter should be made clear in the first
paragraph itself. The tone of the content should be formal. Do not use any flowery language.
Another point to keep in mind is that the letter should be concise and to the point. And
always be respectful and considerate in your language, no matter the subject of your letter.

Closing the Letter: At the end of your letter, we write a complimentary closing with "Yours
Faithfully" or "Yours Sincerely". Generally, we use the later if the writer knows the name of
the person.

Signature: Here finally you sign your name. And then write your name beneath the signature.
This is how the recipient will know who is sending the letter.
