Page 1: Introduction

Transportation plays a vital role in economic development. Rapid urbanisation and population
growth have led to a significant rise in vehicle registrations in India. While this growth improves
mobility, it also causes serious problems such as air pollution and road accidents. Vehicle
registration data helps in understanding traffic density and its impact on the environment and road
safety. This project analyses vehicle registration data and studies its correlation with pollution levels
and road accidents using applied mathematical tools.
Page 2: Rationale of the Study
India is witnessing rapid growth in vehicle ownership, leading to deteriorating air quality and
increased road accidents. Vehicular emissions are a major contributor to air pollution, while
increased traffic density raises accident probability. The project uses mathematical analysis to
study these real-life problems and highlights the importance of sustainable transport.
Page 3: Objectives of the Project
The objectives of this project are to study vehicle registration trends, analyse pollution levels,
examine road accident data, establish correlations using mathematical tools, and demonstrate
real-life applications of applied mathematics.
Page 4: Scope of the Study
The scope of this study is limited to selected years and urban data. It focuses on correlation
analysis and does not establish direct causation. Despite limitations, the study provides meaningful
academic insights.
Page 5: Data Collection
The data used in this project is secondary data collected from government transport reports,
pollution control agencies, and road safety statistics. The data has been simplified for academic
use.

The table below shows the growth of registered vehicles over the years.

2015: 210 million

2016: 225 million
2017: 245 million
2018: 270 million
2019: 295 million
2020: 310 million
2021: 330 million

PM2.5 levels increase with rising vehicle numbers, indicating vehicular contribution to air pollution.
Page 8: Road Accident Data
Road accident trends show an increase with rising vehicle density.
Page 9: Mathematical Analysis
Mean and percentage calculations are used to analyse trends and summarise data.
Page 10: Correlation Analysis
A positive correlation exists between vehicle registrations and pollution as well as road accidents.
Page 11: Applications of Applied Mathematics
Applied Mathematics is used in traffic planning, pollution control, and policy-making.
Page 12: Limitations
The study does not consider all variables affecting pollution and accidents.
Page 13: Suggestions
Promoting public transport, electric vehicles, and road safety awareness can reduce pollution and
accidents.
Page 14: Future Scope
Further studies can include larger datasets and advanced statistical models.
Page 15: Conclusion
The project concludes that increased vehicle registrations lead to higher pollution levels and
accident rates. Applied Mathematics plays a crucial role in analysing and solving such real-life
problems.
