Nosocomial Infections (HAI)
Infections are considered nosocomial if they first appear 48 hours or more after hospital admission or within 30 days after discharge. This type of infection is also known as a hospital-acquired infection (or, in generic terms, healthcare-associated infection).
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that these infections are associated with 99,000 deaths per year in the U.S.
Nosocomial infections cost $4.5 billion and contributed to more than 88,000 deathsone death every 6 minutes.

CSSD
CSSD is the abbreviation of the Central Sterile Supply Department. The objective of establishing a Central Sterile Supply Department is to make reliably sterilized articles available at the required time and place for any agreed purpose in the Hospital as economically as possible, having regard to the need to conserve the time of users

Decontamination zone
Here the equipment are received . The equipment are washed at the procedure site itself. Equipment from wards Are received here. Registers are maintained to record the entries. Equipment from OT are received through dumbwaiter lift(50 kg capacity) directly

Packed in double layered linen Labeled with date, Kit name and procedure place .
Cleaning

Heat sterilization
The kits are labeled with chemical indicator stickers that have lot number , date and date of expiry written on it.
These kits are stacked on trolleys in a vertical position
The trolley is placed in side the autoclave.
Autoclaving
Temp-134 deg Pressure- 2.3 kg(30 psi) Sterilization time-4 mins Dry time-20-30 mins All the procedures are operated digitally by the use of computer. External steam supply is provided.
Indicators used
After the sterilization the chemical indicator strip is checked if it shows the positive result that means the cycle is successful.
ETO-ethylene oxide sterilisation
The properties that make EO such a good ethylating agent also makes it extremely dangerous at ambient oxygen levels
Used for plastic equipment that cannot be autoclaved. The equipment are packed in medi pack sterilization reel.
Negetive pressure room 12 hrs cycle
3M 300 g EO cylinder(100 ml 1 time use) 750 mm pressure. Two ETO machines
Sterile room
The sterilized equipment from both heat sterile zone and ETO zone are sent to sterile zone.
From there they are issued according to there expiry date.
Double window issuing is done in order to ensure the infection control.
