The Early Grades Reading Assessment (EGRA): An Overview
What is EGRA?
a diagnostic instrument designed to assess the foundation skills for literacy acquisition of grades 1 to 3 pupils.
Why focus on early grades?
The ability to read and understand a simple text is one of the most fundamental skills a child can learn. Learning to read with understanding and at a sufficient rate is essential for learning to read well.
Acquiring literacy becomes more difficult as students grow older. Children who do not learn to read in the first few grades are unable to learn the other subject areas in the upper grades. (learn to read; read to learn)
Children who cant read in the upper grades are more likely to repeat and eventually drop out.
