BAMBOO MATCH STICK UNIT
Why Bamboo ?
Reduction in the use of timber
Being renewable with short rotation period, bamboo can be really sustainable raw material resource for making match sticks. Growing bamboo will help reduce soil erosion and there by help enhance productivity of adjoining agricultural lands. Bamboo match sticks are eco-friendly.
Enhanced social and community welfare
What are bamboo match splints ?
Safety matches are essential consumer commodity needed by all sections of the society. Wood is the major raw material for manufacturing match sticks. Recently a technology for using bamboo for match splints has been developed by IPIRTI in collaboration with INBAR. The manufacturing process developed at IPIRTI involves pretreatment of bamboo splints with sodium meta-silicate, bleaching by dipping in diluted hydrogen peroxide for 15 20 minutes followed by washing in water and dipped in 0.5 to 1% boric acid and drying. Treated splints are required to be dipped in molten wax at 80 1200C for 8 12 seconds followed by heating at around 150 0C for 2-3 seconds on a hot plate. Burning head composition and fixing is same as that in the case of wooden match sticks. Bamboo matchsticks are cost effective alternate to wooden matchstick and conform to Indian Standards for wooden match sticks.

Main Development attributes to Matchstick unit
Reduces dependence on wood resources and there by increases the environmental protection and conservation. Permits rehabilitation of degraded lands through increased areas of bamboo plantation. Creates income generating opportunities for bamboo growers and employment for unskilled, semi-skilled and technical staff at the unit. The technology can be adopted in the existing match units.
Some Salient Points
A unit capable of producing 300-500 million match boxes per year will create employment for 75 people, mostly female workers. The environment friendly nature of bamboo, increases greatly potential export market in well developed countries. Bamboo matchstick can be produced at the existing match industry since the chemical processing is same as that of wooden match splints.
