THE
MAKING
Nylon factories combine the
chemicals that produce nylon,
heating them first to remove
the water. The small molecules
from each chemical combine
during this heating to form
very large molecules in a
process called polymerization.
The nylon then comes out of
this heating machine in a flat
ribbon. As this ribbon cools, it
hardens. Then it is cut into
pieces, which are then sent to
factories where they are
melted and used to make the
thousands of different

High temperatures are able to
melt nylon.
Because of this fact, when
ironing items made of nylon
you should set your iron at a

It also began to replace
silk as an ingredient in
military items like flak
vests, parachutes and in
vehicle tires.
Parachutes, stockings, tires,
carpets, gears, machine
parts, bearings, and
furniture, and hair brushes.
It can also be found in
various clothing items,
strings for musical
instruments and bridal
veils.
When it was first
invented, nylon was
used to make the
bristles for
toothbrushes.
Nylon in its solid form is
used to make machine
screws, gears and
machinery components

Did you know?
One of the most important fact
about nylon is about its name.
You may not know how nylon got
its name. Nylon was discovered
and patented by two nations New York and London. It was
given patent on the same day. So
people called it NYLON in which
NY stands for New York and LON
stands for London
