Intro to Computer Graphics

The document defines key terms related to computer graphics. It defines a graphic as a visual representation of an object, contrasting it with text. It then provides a brief history of graphics from cave paintings to ancient Egyptians to Greeks contributions to geometry. The term "graphics" in art refers to work using lines and tones rather than color like drawings and engraving. Design is defined as the process of planning and designing an object, system, or interaction, taking into account aesthetic, functional, economic and social factors. INTRODUCTION ABOUT GRAPHIC

A graphic is an image or visual

representation of an object.
Therefore, computer graphics are
simply images displayed on a
computer screen. Graphics are often
contrasted with text, which is
comprised of characters, such as
numbers and letters, rather than
images.

HISTORY OF GRAPHIC

The earliest graphics known to anthropologists studying

prehistoric periods are cave paintings and markings on
boulders, bone, ivory, and antlers, which were created during
the Upper Palaeolithic period from 40,00010,000 B.C. or
earlier. Many of these were found to record astronomical,
seasonal, and chronological details. Some of the earliest
graphics and drawings known to the modern world, from
almost 6,000 years ago, are that of engraved stone tablets
and ceramic cylinder seals, marking the beginning of the
historic periods and the keeping of records for accounting and
inventory purposes. Records from Egypt predate these and
papyrus was used by the Egyptians as a material on which to
plan the building of pyramids; they also used slabs of
limestone and wood. From 600250BC, the Greeks played a
major role in geometry. They used graphics to represent their
mathematical theories such as the Circle Theorem and the
Pythagorean theorem.
In art, "graphics" is often used to distinguish work in a
monotone and made up of lines, as opposed to painting.

TERM OF GRAPHIC

The term usually refers to the arts that rely more on line or tone
than on color, especiallydrawingand the various forms of
engraving;it is sometimes understood to refer specifically to
printmakingprocesses, such asline engraving,aquatint,
drypoint,etching,mezzotint,monotype,lithography, and
screen printing(silk-screen, serigraphy).Graphic art further
includescalligraphy,photography,painting,typography,
computer graphics, andbindery. It also encompasses drawn
plans and layouts for interior and architectural designs.

WHAT IS DESIGN??
Designis the creation of aplanorconventionfor the
construction of an object, system or measurable human
interaction.Design has different connotations in different fields.
In some cases, the direct construction of an object (as in
pottery,engineering,management,coding, andgraphic design)
is also considered to be design.
Designing often necessitates considering theaesthetic,
functional, economic, and sociopolitical dimensions of both the
design object and design process. It may involve considerable
research, thought, modeling, interactiveadjustment, and redesign. Meanwhile, diverse kinds of objects may be designed,
includingclothing,graphical user interfaces,skyscrapers,
corporate identities, business processes, and even methods of
designing.
Thus "design" may be a substantive referring to a categorical
abstraction of a created thing or things (the design of
something), or a verb for the process of creation, as is made
clear by grammatical context.
