Column Design Verification with Prokon

This document summarizes different methods for designing reinforced concrete columns using Prokon software. It analyzes 5 methods - manual procedure, rectangular column, general column, rectangular column with modified top/bottom moments, and general column with modified moments. For each method it shows the equivalent reinforcement bar required and the factor of safety achieved. The general column method with modified moments matched the manual design and achieved an acceptable factor of safety of 1.001.

Verification of Column

Design using Prokon.

Problem.

Reinforced Concrete Design to BS 8110- H Allen.

Methods of Design.
1. Manual Procedure
2. Using Rectangular Column
3. Using General Column
4. Using Rectangular Column by changing top and
Bottom moment
5. Using General Column by changing top and Bottom
moment
1. Manual Method.

Equivalent bar is 4T40

2. Using Rectangular Column

Equivalent bar is 4T40

3. Using General Column

• When Equivalent 4T40 bar FoS is 1.135

• Then Equivalent bar reduced to 4T32 and FoS is 1.001

4. Using Rectangular Column by
changing top and Bottom moment

Equivalent bar is 4T32

5. Using General Column by changing
top and Bottom moment

Equivalent bar is 4T32

Summary
Bar Design
Method Adopted. FoS
Req. Element

1 Manual Procedure 4T40 NA

2 RCol 4T40 Top
3 Top High Moments 4T40 Top 1.135
GCol
4T32 Top 1.001
4 Bottom High moments by RCol 4T32 Top
5 interchanging the values Gcol 4T32 Bot 1.001

Cannot be Top.
Conclusion
• Rectangular Column Design Procedure may have
some bugs.

• General Column Seems well matched with manual

design.
