Understanding Metric Length Conversion

This document provides instruction on metric conversions. It begins with an introduction explaining the importance of understanding measurement systems. It then presents the metric system as easier to use than the English system because conversions are consistently decimal. A "ladder" diagram shows the relationship between metric units and how to convert up and down. Several examples of conversions between kilometers, meters, decimeters, centimeters and millimeters are provided. Students are asked to complete similar conversion problems and are provided a reference card and quiz to check their understanding.

SIMPLE CALCULATIONS: DO IT!
Hello…Im tkinker bell…I will show you how
this lesson the English and Metric System of
Measurement used to measure length.
Since these systems used in our community,
a good grasp of this concept will help you
students be more accurate in dealing with
concepts involving length such as distance,
perimeter and area. This lesson on
measurement tackles concepts which your
students have most probably encountered
and will continue to deal with in their daily
lives. Moreover, concepts and skills related to
measurement are prerequisites to topics in
Geometry as well as Algebra.

The Metric System of
Measurement is easier
to use than the English
System of Measurement
since its conversion
factors would
consistently be in the
decimal system, unlike
the English System of
Measurement where
units of lengths have
different conversion
factors.
In a ladder-like arrangement,
going down the ladder will km
require multiplication and
going up the ladder will hm
involve division. Here is a
device to help you convert one
metric unit to conversion unit. dam

13 km=______m
From km to m is 3 steps
down, hence multiply by
10³ or 1,000
Then; 13 km= 13 km x1,000
=13,000 m
