Chinese Number System: Group 4

The Chinese numeration system uses characters to represent numbers from zero to nine as well as multiples of ten. Unlike Western numerals, the Chinese system writes out numbers as words rather than using positional notation. Over time, the system evolved from oracle bone script numerals to rod numerals used by mathematicians, and now uses both simple and complex characters on different materials like checks and everyday use.

The Chinese numeration system has
characters that correspond to the numbers
zero to nine. Unlike the number system we are
used to, the Chinese system also has special
characters to represent ten, a hundred, a
thousand, ten thousand, as well as other
multiples of ten.

The Chinese system is not now used for

calculation. This Chinese system is really a
way of writing numbers as words.
Shang numerals
These are the numerals
that were used in the
Oracle Bone Script
from the 14th century
BC. Later numerals
used in Chinese
developed from these.
Rod numerals
Rod numerals or counting rods were a positional numeral
system used by merchants, mathematicians and
astronomers from the Han Dynasty to the 16th century.
Suzhou numerals
The Suzhou numerals system is a version of the rod
numeral systems that were formerly used in China.

Modern Chinese numerals
The complex numerals are used on
cheques, banknotes and coins and are
the equivalent of writing 'one', 'two',
'three', etc, rather than 1, 2, 3. The
simple numerals are used for
everything else.
