Confucius
Confucius (551 B.C. to 479 B.C.).
Confucius is one of the truly great men
that China has produced. The word
Confucius is the Westernized form of his
name, which is Kung Fu Tzu, Kung being
his proper name, Fu signifying revered,
and Tzu signifying teacher.
His teachings, preserved in the
Analects, focused on creating ethical
models of family and public interaction
and setting educational standards. After
his death, Confucius became the official
imperial philosophy of China, which
was extremely influential during the
Han, Tang and Song dynasties.

Confucianism
The philosophical ideas taught by
Confucius led to development of
Confucianism, a system of beliefs
observed by most Chines and
concerned particularly with moral
behaviour.
Confucianism is often characterized as a
system of social and ethical philosophy
rather than a religion. In fact,
Confucianism built on an ancient
religious foundation to establish the
social values, institutions, and
transcendent ideals of traditional
Chinese society.
It was what sociologist Robert Bellah
called a "civil religion,"
1. The sense of religious identity and
common moral understanding at the
foundation of a society's central
institutions. It is also what a Chinese
sociologist called a "diffused
religion";
2. Its institutions were not a separate
church, but those of society, family,
school, and state; its priests were not
separate liturgical specialists, but
parents, teachers, and officials.
Confucianism was part of the Chinese
social fabric and way of life; to
Confucians, everyday life was the arena
of religion.
The Analects of Confucius, a
collection of Confucian
sayings, contain truth about
social relations between and
among family member or
friends.
Selections from the Analects of
Confucius
•Superior man understands
what is right; the inferior
man understands what will
sell.
•The superior man loves his
soul; the inferior man loves
his property.
•The superior man blames
himself; the inferior man
blames others.
•To know what you know and
know what you don’t know is
the characteristic of one who
knows
•Do not worry about people
not knowing you, but strive
to be worth knowing
•A man who has committed a
mistake and does not
correct it is committing
another mistake
•Reading without thinking
gives one a disorderly mind;
thinking without reading
makes one flighty.
•When a country is in order, it
is a shame to be poor and a
common man; when the
country is in chaos, it is a
shame to be rich and an
official.
•To repay evil with kindness
is a sign of a generous
character; to repay kindness
with evil is the sign of a
criminal.
•A man who has a beautiful
soul always has some
beautiful things to say, but a
man who says beautiful
things does not necessarily
have a beautiful soul.
