This presentation covered key aspects of teacher evaluation and observation under the AchieveNJ system for non-tenured teachers. It discussed that teacher evaluation has multiple measures including teacher practice, student growth objectives, and student achievement data. It outlined that non-tenured teachers receive a minimum of 3 observations annually, including 1 long observation of 40 minutes and 1 short observation of 20 minutes. Teachers also develop a Professional Development Plan each year with goals aligned to evaluation feedback, school improvement plans, and their role in professional learning communities. Additionally, teachers set 2 Student Growth Objectives that are standards-aligned, data-driven, and measure student growth over time to demonstrate teacher effectiveness.

the legislature and signed into law on August 2, 2012 by Governor Chris Christie.”
(Teacher Evaluation Guidebook, Paterson NJ 2019)
• The purpose of the law is to “raise student achievement by improving instruction
through the adoption of evaluations that provide specific feedback to educators,”

and help to align professional development that are informed by the results of the

PDP- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
WHAT IS A PDP AND HOW DOES IT PERTAIN TO ME?

• A PDP is an Individual Professional Development Plan that is written by the teacher in

conjunction with their supervisor. “Teachers and school leaders now utilize their
educational practice and student learning data to prioritize areas for improvement as

• One goal on the PDP must be created through the use of observation results and data
from the annual performance evaluation.
• One must to be aligned to one of the following:
• A teacher’s role as a member of a PLC
• Any school or district improvement plans
• They can be modified throughout the year. But are due by October 31 st or one
month of teacher’s start date. (NJ Department of Education, Updated 5.17)
