WHAT IS A FRACTION?
When an object is divided into a
number of equal parts then each
part is called a fraction
2 numerator
3 denominator
Denominator
The denominator says how many equal parts in
the whole object
1
2 equal parts
2
Find the fraction of these
shapes
Note: A fraction with a denominator
of zero is UNDEFINED.
THREE BASIC TYPES OF FRACTIONS:
1.PROPER FRACTION
A fraction whose numerator is less than the denominator.
Example: 1 , 5 , 7
4 8 12
2. IMPROPER FRACTION
A fraction whose numerator is more than or equal to the denominator.
Example:
9 5 6
2 , 5 , 4
3. MIXED FRACTION
A combination of a whole number and a proper fraction.
Example: 2 34 , 3 27 , 10 69
*ADDING AND SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS
WITH LIKE DENOMINATORS
-two or more fractions with like denominator are
added or subtracted by adding or subtracting the
numerator over like denominator.
Example: Perform the following operations.

MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS
1. To multiply fractions, follow these steps.
a. Multiply the numerators; then, multiply the
denominators.
b. Reduce the product to its lowest term.
2. To multiply mixed numbers, follow these steps.
a. Change the mixed numbers to improper fractions.
b. Multiply the numerators; then, multiply the
denominators.
c. Reduce the product to its lowest term.
