What is Windows?
A rectangular parts of a computer screen that contains a display
different from the rest of the screen.

Graphical user Interface (GUI)
Older operating systems, such as DOS called CLI are used by
typing command using keyboard.
Windows XP environment is an example of GUI
Users interact with computer using mouse more than the keyboard.

The Desktop
Windows desktop has different components
Icons =>My document, my computer, My Network place,
internet explorer, recycle bin

The Windows Desktop
The Desktop is the very first screen you see after Windows starts.
There you find folders, icons and application shortcuts

Window Elements(Basic parts of windows)
Title bar – displays the title of the program and the file name
Menu bar – contains names of drop down menus used to access
tools
Toolbar(s) – third and sometimes fourth bars, contains button
shortcuts of the most commonly used tools
Minimize button – makes the current window shrink from the
desktop while remaining open
Resize button – changes the size of the current window
Maximize button – returns the current window to full screen size
Close button – closes / quits the program of the current window
Scroll bars –used to move the window area to display hidden

Menu Bar components
File: Controls things like opening, saving and printing files and Exiting programs
Edit: containing the main editing commands like Cut, Copy and paste.
View: allows you to customize how your application appears to you
Tools: a common area to set up your application parameter
Help: Where you can find help, updates and About the program version

Mouse Activities on files and folders
Single Click :-to select the file
Double Click:-To open the file
Right Click:-To view options
Dragging
- Often in windows there is more than one way of Opening Files/folders
Double click the left button of the mouse on the file/folder or
Right click on the file/folder and then click the open option.
Make new Folders:-Two ways
[Link] a window for the folder should be oriented
Click on the file menu and select new, then folder
Type the name and press enter
[Link] a window for the folder should be created
Right click anywhere in the window, then folder

Type name and press enter.
Delete files/Folder:-Two ways
Single click the file/folder
Go to file menu, then click delete
Or
Right click on the file or folder, then Clicks delete option.
If you do not need the file to be recycle bin
Select the file/folder
Press shift key and then press delete key
Click yes to delete
Rename files/Folder:-
Right click on the file or folder, then Clicks Rename option.

Cut/copy & paste files/folder
Used to move files /folder from one location to another location.
For copy to paste the original files/folder remains in its old location.
For cut & paste it is removed from old location
There are two ways
[Link] the file/folder
[Link] edit menu then copy or cut
[Link] to the destination folder
[Link] edit then paste
[Link] Right click on the file /folder
Choose cut or copy
Open the new window or folder
Right click anywhere in the window
Choose paste
You could see copying dialog box

Alternate
Select the files/folder
Keep the selected icon visible, and open up a new window
Drag and drop
When dragging
Simply drag and drop=Cut & paste
Ctrl key+ Drag and drop=Copy & paste
The Recycle bin
It is a garbage of deleted files/folder
You can restore deleted files/folders to the original location.
Find your important files
Select the file, them go to the file menu
Choose Restore

CTRL+ESC: Open Start menu
ALT+TAB: Switch between open programs

ALT+U underlined letter: Opens the menu
ALT+F4: Closes the current window
CTRL+F4: Closes the current Multiple Document interface (MDI)
General folder /Short cut Control
F4: Select the GO To A Different Folder box and moves down the entries in the box
( If the tool bar is active in windows Explorer)
F5: Refreshes the current window.
F6: Moves among panes in windows Explorer
CTRL+G: Opens the GO TO Folder tool (in Windows 95 Windows Explorer only)
CTRL+Z: Undo the last command
CTRL +A: Select all the items in the current window
BACKSPACE: Switch to the parent folder
SHIFT + click + close button: for folders, close the current folder plus all parent
folders

Accessibility Shortcuts
Press SHIFT five times: Toggles sticky Keys on and off
Press down and hold the right SHIFT key for eight second: toggles Filter keys on and off
Press down and hold the NUM LOCK key for five seconds: Toggles Toggle keys On and off
Left ALT+ Left SHLFT+ NUMLOCK: Toggles Mouse Keys on and off
Left ALT+ Left SHLFT+PRINT SCREEN: Toggles high contrast on and off
Documents short cuts
HOME – to beginning of line or far left of field or screen
END – to end of line, or far right of filed or screen
CTRL+END – to the bottom
PAGE UP – Moves you up in your document or dialogue box by one page
PAGE DOWN – moves you down in your document or dialogue list by one page
Ctrl + ENTER – New page
