ASSERTION
Assertion
It is a stylistic approach or technique involving a strong
declaration, a forceful or confident and positive statement
regarding a belief or a fact.
To assert is to state with force, so if someone makes an
assertion, they’re not just trying out an idea- they really mean
it.
It is a statement from the writer to show emphasis and force
that their ideas is right.
An assertion can be found in some reading text that shows
dialogue and the assertion is always enclosed with the ( “___”)

Basic Assertion
It is a simple and straightforward statement where in the writer shows
his/her statement for expressing feelings opinions and beliefs.
It is a simple expression for standing up for personal rights, beliefs and
feelings.
Example:
“Excuse me, I would like to finish what I am saying.”
“I wish I never met you because you broke my heart.”

Emphatic Assertion
It conveys sympathy to someone.
It is usually done in two parts. First, you recognize the feeling of other
person and second, emphasize your statement
Example:
“I know that you are so busy today, but you need to submit
all your requirements later.”
“I understand that all of you are hungry, but we need to
wait for the birthday girl.”
Tell whether it is Basic Assertion or Emphatic Assertion
BA 1. “I don’t like this pasta, it taste like old rotten food.”
B A 2. “Excuse me, I would like to finish this work then I shall go with
you.”
EA 3. I know this is making you angry and frustrated because you
could not respond yet. But I can help you by giving you an
estimate of how long will it take.
B A 4. “Do this for me and I will pay you more.”
E A 5. “I hope that it is time for you to breath because I will tell you a
bad news that I heard this day.”
E A 6. “I understand that you are broken hearted but you need to know
how to move on and live your life again.”

Escalating Assertion
It occurs when someone is not able to give response to basic assertions of
the person and therefore, that person becomes firm about him or her.
It starts with a minimal response then later the tone will become firm and
strong.
Example:
“If you do not finish your work on time, I will find another
employee.”
“I know that this is important but, I want you to finish this
first.”

Language Assertion
It involves “I” language and useful for expressing negative feelings
nevertheless, it give emphasis on the person’s feeling of anger.
Example:
“When you speak harshly, I cannot work with you because
I feel annoyed.”
“Do not make any joke about me because I feel angry.”

Positive Assertion
Expressing positive feelings about yourself or to others.
Example:
“I’m glad you came back to see me.”
“I did a good working job today.”

E A 1. “Eat your dinner then finish all your homework.”
P A 2. “I am happy that I reach the top of the mountain.”
L A 3. “When I cannot take proper sleep, it affects my mood and I feel
irritated.”
E A 4. “If you keep on bullying me, I will report you to the guidance office.”
L A 5. “You always come late at home that’s why I freak out.
P A 6. “You’re amazing today, just continue your good attitude.”
E A 7. “If you will not pay your debt, I will file a case in a court.”
L A 8. “You always come late everyday and that’s why, I feel mad all day.”
