HISTORY OF COMPILATION

OF THE QURAN
• DURING THE LIFE OF THE PROPHET:
A. VARIOUS COMPANIONS AND PROPHET HIMSELF LEARNT VERSES BY HEART
B. REVELATION WAS NOTED ON STONE SLABS, LEATHER SHEETS, PALM LEAVES,
FLAT BONES OF CAMELS
C. 40 SCRIBERS
• ARDAH; PROPHET’S RECITATION OF THE SPECIFIC PORTION OF THE QURAN HAD
BEEN REVEALED, BEFORE THE COMPANIONS, EVERY RAMADAN
• LAST TIME, ARDAH-I- AKHEERA, PROPHET RECITED THE QURAN TWICE; CALIPH
UMAR INTRODUCED THE TRADITION OF TRAWIH BASED ON THE SAME NOBLE
PRACTICE OF THE HOLY PROPHETS
• ON PROPHET’S DEATH; THE QURAN: IN THE HEATS OF THE HUNDREDS OF HUFFAZ
AND PRESERVED ON VARIOUS ARTICLES; NOT IN A BOOK FORM.
ABU BAKR’S CALIPHATE (632- 634 AD)

• AFTER THE DEMISE OF PROPHET(PBUH) MANY FALSE PROPHETS APPEARED. AMONG THEM
WAS MUSAILMA. SO, HAZRAT ABU ABAKR WAGED A WAR AGAINST HIM AND MANY
COMPANIONS (HUFFAZ) WERE MARTYRED.
• HAZRAT UMER SENSED THE DANGER OF CONSEQUENCES OF A SIMILAR TRAGEDY IN FUTURE.
• HAZRAT ABU APPOINTED THE TEAM HEADED BY ZAID BIN SABIT. ZAID BIN SABIN
COLLECTED THE CHAPTERS OF THE QURAN FROM EVERY PERSON. HE COLLECTED IT FROM
PLAM LEAVES, STONES, PIECES OF WOOD
• COMMITTED IT TO MEMORY. HE WOULD ALSO CONFIRMED THE WRITTEN PIECE OF QURAN
FROM PEOPLE WHO HAD HEARD PROPHET(PBUH).
• THE SCRIPT PREPARED BY ZAID BIN SABIT WAS WITH
• THE FIRST CALIPH
• THEN TO HAZRAT UMAR
• AFTER HIS DEATH, TO HAZRAT HAFSA. THIS COPY OF THE QURAN KNOWN AS
MASHAF AL- HAFSA.
• THE QURAN WAS RECITED LOUDLY FROM THE START TILL THE END IN THE PROPHET’S MOSQUE
• THUS, A NUMBER OF COPIES WERE MADE AND COMPARED WITH THE ORIGINAL SCRIPT
• NO DOTS/ DESINENTIAL MARKS WERE PLACED TO INCORPORATE ALL THE WAYS OF RECITATION
AND SO, THE QURAN WAS COMPILED AS WELL AS STANDARDIZED
• SURAHS WERE ARRANGED IN ORDER OF RECITATION
• COPIES WERE SENT TO MAKKA, TAMAN, BAHRAIN, SYRIA, BASRA AND KUFA; RECITERS WERE
ALSO SENT
• ALL THE VARIANTS WERE BURNT THAT DIFFERED IN ANY WAY FROM THE STANDARD VERSION.
HAZRAT USMAN (644-656 AD)

• A HUGE MUSLIM EMPIRE WAS EXTENDED TO REMOTE NON- ARAB TERRITORIES.


• NEW CONVERTS WERE REPORTED TO BE DISPUTING ON THE WAYS OF RECITATION OF THE QURAN
• ANAS BIN MALIK WITNESSED SUCH DISPUTES IN ARMENIA- AZERBAIJAN AND REPORTED TO
HAZRAT USMAN
• HAZRAT USMAN APPOINTED FOUR SCRIBES; ZAYD BIN THABIT,ABDULLAH IN ZUBAYR, SAEED BIN
AL-AAS AND REHMAN BIN HARITH
• THEY WERE INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW T HE DIALECT OF THE QURAISHIN AS OF DIFFERENCES
OVER THE LANGUAGE/ PRONUNCIATION, SINCE THE QURAN HAS BEEN REVEALED IN THE
QURAUSHITE DIALECT
